But we can agree your Captain needs to be a first choice player at least, right?

Yes, of course.

But I don't understand this. Wasn't Pochettino supposed to be assessing the squad before making any decisions?

How many players does Levy allow to retire at the club these days? Every player is one last pay day past the age of 30!

Man City are full of mercenaries, doesn't do them any harm.
Yes but there's more to a football club than just football.
And part of that extra bit is what loyal players like Daws bring.
Attitude and heart that the fans identify with.
If he was willing he might bring a lot more more to the club
when he finishes playing.
You can't buy of coach what Daws brings.

For captain? Whys that?
Dont know why you got a "d'oh" rating for that. Seems like a fair question. One thing i noticed about this season was that in many games Hugo was one of the few players who actually looked like he cared (dont worry Daws did too). Not only that but he kept fighting to the end, kept barking out orders and not once did he throw in the towel. In short he was a leader. More so than Dawson for me at least. And when you think about it which other player presents a viable alternative?

I think he is worth keeping. He isn't starting XI quality at the moment but he isn't too far off the mark. In reality he is getting on in age, losing some pace and making some errors but he isn't a huge step down from our current defenders.

In fact, Dawson was arguably our best performed defender last season. A quick assessment of our current CB's.

Kaboul simply cannot be replied upon to stay fit and play 25+ decent games. Last year he showed glimpses of his talent but in general was poor because of an inability to get match fit at any stage.

Vertonghen is similarly injury prone and his performances last year were not as good as Dawsons. He dropped his head and the effort level wasn't as high as expected. But, fully expect him to regroup and be a starting CB.

Chiricheș looked shaky but talented. In truth we can't really predict what direction he will take this year. I think either he will become a quality EPL CB or he will struggle to make the grade.

Why sell him? For the sake of 3-4m? I just don't think that at the moment we can take the risk of letting him go. I could understand if we have a very able and suitable replacement ready to come in. I think even if we sign a star CB from overseas we can do worse than have Dawson as a ready to play backup.

I've never been entirely happy with the idea of the keeper as captain. The huge argument in favour is that he's got the best overview of what's happening (see Lloris' recent interview), but against that it's very difficult for him to influence events in the opposition half.

Daws has done great but time for him to forge a new career at 30 ?

Has 5 years in him.

Good luck to him whatever he decides or wherever he goes.

It's not just the 4 mill. It's freeing up wages.

Dawson has been a great servant, but he's not comfortable enough on the ball for Pochettino's system. At 30 he may want to be playing regular football too, rather than being 3rd or 4th choice and spending time warming the bench. Levy will also be looking to cash in before he is too old and whilst he seeks to sign young players.

Has been a great servant , a leader amongst men at times. Was not blessed with the greatest of talent but always gave his all with a cheeky smile on his face. Would have prefered if we kept Caulker last season to learn off Dawson . Caulkers raw talent plus Dawson's work ethic would make for a great modern day professional to lead the club for the next 10 years.
