Christophe Gernignon-Lecomte, director of the Meribel resort, told Radio Monte Carlo Sport: "He was shocked, a little shaken but conscious.

"It may be a head injury but it is not very serious."

He added: "He was wearing a helmet and banged [his head] against a rock."

First reports said serious, but following reports said he was conscious when taken to hospital. I responded to the first reports and no, he's not on my CDL list!

However, head injuries like this always need to be monitored. Look what happened to Natasha Richardson after what was described as a bump on the head and she got it while ski-ing too.

Former motor racing world champion Michael Schumacher is in a coma following a skiing accident in France.
The 44-year-old German suffered a "serious brain trauma with coma on his arrival, which required an immediate neurosurgical operation," according to a hospital in the French city of Grenoble.

More follows...

There have been quite a few avalanche fatalities in that region of the alps in the last week or so

:(

He is my prayers tonight- I am very worried that if he fights through this, he won't be the same man, as is often the case with people with serious head injuries
But obviously the main key thing is that he gets through this which is what I am sure everyone wants, regardless of any other consequences

His very high level of fitness gives him the best chance of pulling through and making the best recovery. Fingers crossed for you Michael.

This is god awful news:(. I remember when I first saw Schumi in his junior Mercedes days and following him through all his glory day's in F1. Quite ironic how nearly 20yrs after Senna passing away through a head trauma, A similar fate is now bestowed on Michael who was behind Ayrton at the time and also 10yrs older than Senna was when he went.

I sincerely hope and pray that he pulls through this, Far too many legends go way before their time. Come on Michael you are strong enough to get through this!!

It is also worth pointing out that Richard Hammond suffered serious head trauma during his crash filming for topgear and survived to tell the tale. I think with Natasha Richardson, She had swelling on the brain that was not noted at the time And was followed by a lucid interval (What Schumacher has when he was concious). taken from Wiki:

"The injury was followed by a lucid interval, when Richardson seemed to be fine and was able to talk and act normally. Paramedics and an ambulance which initially responded to the accident were told they were not needed and left.[19] Refusing medical attention twice, she returned to her hotel room and about three hours later was taken to a local hospital in Sainte-Agathe-des-Monts after complaining of a headache.[20][21] She was transferred from there by ambulance to Hôpital du Sacré-Cœur, Montreal, in critical condition and was admitted about seven hours after the fall.[22][23] The following day she was flown to Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City, where she died on 18 March at the age of 45.[24][25] An autopsy conducted by the New York City Medical Examiners Office on 19 March revealed the cause of death was an "epidural hematoma due to blunt impact to the head", and her death was ruled an accident.[20]"

The similarities are similar to Schumi's but he was taken in straight away and induced into a coma, So they could help relieve the pressure on his brain.

Which shows that head injuries, even those which do not appear to be too serious at the time, should always be scanned and monitored in hospital. It could save your life.

Imagine what might have happened to Spurs and AVB if Lloris's head injury suddenly took a turn for the worse soon after letting him stay on.

I agree, Such a shame that Natasha Richardson did not have the foresight to do this straight away :(

Yep, I think any significant blow to the head should be referred to a hospital. Avb was fortunate and obviously so was Lloris.

Still bleeding in the brain and no predictions possible on prognosis. They said today that he was off piste travelling at between 40 and 60 mph and the rock that he hit split through the helmet so that must have been some impact.

Even if he recovers, will he still be the Michael Schumacher he was? Seems doubtful which is very sad.

Would he actually want to recover with such severe brain damage and not be the active, dynamic person he was? Even his basic personality could be very different.

This is a terrible tragedy, whether he survives or not.
