Edgar Davids has rejected the advances of West Ham boss Alan Curbishley and instead want's to fight for his place at White Hart Lane.

Spurs boss Martin Jol is willing to allow Davids to leave on a free transfer this January and West Ham have the resources and a willingness to meet his £50,000 a week wage demands but the Dutchman believes he can still earn his place at Spurs.

The Daily Star on Sunday quotes a source close to Davids as saying:

"Edgar has not said he's unhappy at the club. Even though Edgar is not playing alot for Spurs, he likes the club very much."

Well I would be unhappy to be at the club. I can't play football at all though, and I'm sure I won't be playing a lot for Spurs. I like the club very much, but then for 50,000 quid a week I would, wouldn't I?

    ;-)

Mind you, you're talking about one of the most famous footballers of the past 15 years. For a guy who "can't play football at all", I'd say that 6 domestic titles and 4 European titles isn't too bad an achievement.

Let me guess, you haven't paid too much attention to European football in the 1990's, have you? Edgar Davids has never been the most technically gifted players, that's true, but that doesn't make him a lousy footballer. In Ajax and Juve, he was one the most important players match after match.

Personally, I wouldn't mind him playing instead of Tainio who for me has struggled abit this season. In games like yesterdays he would offer enough aggression to counter teams who only have that weapon to disrupt us a la Cardiff.

Also I would love to see him stay and get involved in coaching the kids and attracting others to the club especially if we could tap into the Dutch Youth system via him and his influence.

The only West Ham speculation that bothers me is the Reo-Coker story. He is one player that we really don't need.
  5. AJ
Exactly. I believe that it's just one of those rumours where someone has put together his willingness to leave and our policy of signing young English talent and come to the conclusion that we must be after him. We have enough central midfielders and Reo-Coker isn't all that in my opinion.
  6. RBlanch
We should have played Davids yesterday, he would have made more of an effort than Murphy!

We really lack aggression in the middle at the moment and even though Davids has lost some of his bite through old age, he would atleast try his hardest in every match.

I think he makes more than 50, although I could be wrong... At any rate, if true, this would be fantastic news. I've doubted suggestions that Davids could come on the coaching staff, because I surmised he still wanted to play first team. If he is willing to give that up and move on, then, by all means, it would be wonderful to have him.

And I agree with another poster: I think he is a useful as Teemu, for the most part, and would be as happy to see him come on. Similar players in some respect really.

I see your logic AJ; lets just sign up every has been player and offer them double as some of our most important first teamers are getting as a thankyou for all the success they achieved with other clubs. Now Zizu's hanged up his boots lets make sure he has a retirement mansion built for him. From what I'm told that Pele chap could play a bit; lets sell our ground and buy him a space shuttle!!

The decision to keep Davids for an extra season (which I forewarned against since about this time last year, resulting in much derision and efforts at defamation from the "Davids is a spurs legind" brigade) has been nothing short of disasterous! All this about him passing on gems of advice to the younger players in training is sheer myth! The truth is that nobody posting here knows what goes on in training - however the educated guess is that Davids is one of the least liked figuers around due the tha parositical nature of his still being with us and his grossly inflated opinion of his ability!

To all those who slated me and hurled insults at me (fickle, disloyal, homacidal maniac etc) I demand you show yourselfs and admit that I was right and you were wrong!!!!!

    dooo daahh dooo daaah.....

Edgar was brilliant last season, but we seriously need to offload him this january £ 50 k a week is too much for our 6th choice CM:

    1. Jenas & Huddlestone
    2. Zokora
    3. Murphy
    4. Tainio
    5. Ghaly
    6. Davids

Maxi, My young cousin played for our youth last season (H.Isa is his name) and he always said that Edgar would spend alot of time with the youth players. Admittedly he did say that Edgar was or always looked angry, but the lads absolutely loved him.

I enjoy your posts mate but i dont buy the "myth" theory, he did/does actually spend alot of time on the training and development of the younger players and I for one would love him as a coach.
  11. AJ
Well, Psycho, I wouldn't have thought that someone could misread my post that much. Did you even bother to read it? Did I in any way suggest that it was a right decision to sign him in the first place, or that it was a right decision to keep him for another season? No. Not with a single word. All I did was to say to Deadlight that perhaps he went too far by saying that Davids "can't play football at all". After reading that, you concluded that I wanted to sell the Lane and give a space shuttle to Pelé. A logic so twisted must be hard to find even in the Bush administration.

I'm not defending our decision to keep Davids, but I believe that Jol has said in some interview that Davids contributes to coaching already by giving advice to younger players. Several players have said that as well. So it's not just a myth.

dannysafer. i've played with hussein at bwood town, wasn't he named the third best player in terms of technique. along with davids and keane/defoe?
  13. StokeSpur
That was when he was in his prime not now and he didnt do any of that on his own, he was surounded by world class players to help him along.
Respect for what he has achived goes without saying but all i feel he has to offer these days is a coaching role.. i wonder if thats what the headline means in tearms of 'Spurs future'.

Probably not because its has been well documented in the press by players (who do know what goes on in training) that davids has stayed after training and helped players with their game, by watching Lennon you can see a difference already, I once heard or read (cant remem which) davids views about the game and he was on about saving yourself for the end of games by not runnin up and down flat out all the time (English game esq) but using yourself in bursts when needed at the vital times during the game.. watch Lennon play and you'll see what i mean.
  16. Real_madyidd
I have this romantic Notion that he is still good. So does he apparently.
  17. Ali
Since, as others have also mentioned, it was well-documented last season that Davids stayed behind to help coach the younger players (Lennon in particular was mentioned by Jol), it obviously isn't a myth. And if as you say, no-one here knows what goes on in training (although Dannysafer obviously does have some insight), then how can you claim to know that he is one of the least liked figures at the club? For "well-educated guess", read "prejudiced and unfounded personal opinion".

If he is happy at the club, then surely it's because he IS well-liked and does have something to offer (i.e. coaching and advice), even though he is not playing. Why stay otherwise? And don't say it's the money - I'm sure a club like West Ham would be able to offer him enough to make it attractive for him to move if it meant he could play more. Clearly that isn't his motivation.
  18. elDiablo
agree totally with ur post Ali, and i would like to add (as im sure someone else has) that is it a coincidence that he doesnt play no more and our away form is nothing short or diabolical. He provided a bit of bite and tenacity that we simply dont have at the moment.....especially without jenas. I was infuriated with the next guy seeing davids pass to the opposition, but maybe his hustling is something we still need!!!!
  19. deadlight
Er...you didn't read my original post matey, did you? I didn't say "He (Davids) can't play football" I said "I (ie. me) can't play football"

    Sorry, just my humour!
