Ranieri loan to Esperia

08 August 2011

Mirko Ranieri has joined FC Esperia Viareggio, who play in the third tier of Italian football, on a season-long loan.
The young Italy goalkeeper has had previous loan spells with Ipswich Town and Basingstoke Town.

Another young goalkeeper who seems to have stagnated, so a loan will be good for him (assuming he plays). Best of luck to him

Assume the Italian third tier is around League 1/League 2 level?

If so, then good move. If he plays of course.

Hmm, I'm not sure Serie C (or B2 or whatnot) is the same as league one. I'd say some teams in the bottom half of Serie B are on that level, once you get below that I think it's semi-professional (granted this is based on some FM experience a year ago).

I don't think he is going to make it. Didn't play at all for Ipswich, and will struggle to get anywhere near the first team while we stockpile experienced pros and retain Button and Jansson.

That's not true. the third tier is fully professional, so is the fourth, it just splits into north and south then. There are actually 6 professional groups/league tables.

Most of Europe splits its league into regional leagues earlier, but the quality of the lower leagues are not poor at all. Although there is a bigger gap between the top clubs and bottom clubs.

In level it is on par with a mixture of League 1 and League 2.

A bit early to be righting off a young keeper who can barely be 20. I am sure Ranieri only went to Ipswich as back up and that there was no expectation he would play – if anything it is a sign of his promise that a Championship side were prepared to take an 18 year old even in that capacity. If Button kicks on he should replace Cudicini as third choice keeper next season, whilst Jansson and Ranieri have a couple more years on loan ahead of them before they could even be considered, so the stockpile of old keepers is an irrelevance. I am worried though that the loan could mean Ranieri is homesick (I am still gutted at Mpoku returning to Belgium.)

From memory I don't think Ranieri even got on the bench at Ipswich, and played for their academy side against us.

I'm not saying he won't be a professional footballer and have a good career, but I don't see him (or the majority of our youngsters) making it. Its increasingly difficult for them to make, and the goalkeeper position is even harder.

If Gomes left tomorrow, Friedel and Cudicini would fill in for a season or two. Then a big name would come in (we wouldn't gamble with Button who hasn't played in the Championship nevermind the Prem). Button might get on to the bench, might get a few games, but history says we would also sign an experienced name, and Jansson and Ranieri would still not get a look in. If our big name keeper went, or Button, we'd probably get in another name, or there would be the next up and coming kid.

Unless they are setting the championship or a league on club alight very early on in their career they will struggle to build up a reputation. The club will buy in first teamers, and they will buy in youngsters (like Walker or Naughton, to Rose and Bostock) from other clubs who will likely get their chance first.

I'm really excited about thee Europa league because it may give some youngsters a chance to make an impression, players like Townsend, Kane, Parratt and Bostock. If one or two of them, and Caulker, can make it at the club we have done really well. But even when we were struggling in mid to low table we didn't bring through much youth, now the stakes are higher its harder to give players a chance.

Ranieri went on loan to Ipswich for their under 18 side but had injuries meaning he didn't play much. Last season went on loan to Basingstoke Town for a month or two but only played a couple of games. Maybe a loan to an Italian club will revive his career.

Agree with you that it looks as if Button being groomed as no 3 keeper - but he needs a season in Championship first imo. I agree shame Mpoku left for Belgium - I suspect he wanted to be in Standard Liege first team rather than on loan to a Championship side which was his alternative if he had stayed at Spurs

To be fair to him, he's going to a top belgium club.
