Nothing amazing about that - but I just read it from a Toon fan on 606 -

And I don't think he had his tongue anywhere near his cheek :)

he was actually calling for wage caps and how disloyal players were threatening to leave the Toon if the got relegated etc

yep that's right - Toon the club rebuilt on Jack Hall's money'

Toon who went round chucking money at any and everyone - including nicking at least two off us with ridiculous salary offers

now twe have a Toon fan moaning about the influence of money on the game

oh it's priceless (sic)

as ye sow etc etc

Well i'd agree with the sentiment about money, however I think if anyone from a topflight club in any European country moans about it they sound like hypocrits. I enjoyed football alot more in the 80's and early 90's in comparism to now as there was alot more competition, but you won't find me bluddy moaning about it.

yep warik - hypocrisy is the word

Toon spent fortunes, and then when that didn't work they spent fortunes they didn't have

it would be very fair indeed if they fell on their gold-crusted swords this sunday

to listen to Toon fans going on about how money is ruining football and adversley affecting their club is rich in the extreme (in more ways than one)

they helped take the mercenary culture in the PL to new levels of lunacy - nicking as I say players like Parker and Duff off us in the process

Both expensive bullets that we probably did well to doge BTW, given their injury records

and it gives me joy everyday to think they laughed at us for buying JJ from them - and every season since we've finished above them :)

money made the toon, and if they do gan doon I sincerely hope lack of it undoes them

(let's see them back in the Prem in 5 years playing fair on the money side - that'll do me :)

PS I know we spend plenty too - but AFAIK we've always spent within our budget and sensible constraints under Levy, and have never offered bank balance-busting wages of the type that toon did -

Unfortunately money has tainted the game, when teams get relegated nowadays people talk about the amount of money they'll lose rather than the loss of glory and prestige for the club.

Since the Prem started money has become a bigger factor than ever before. As we've seen though it doesn't guarantee success. Spend it poorly and with no forward thinking like Leeds and Newcastle have and it could be the end of your club as a top flight competitor. Sides like Wigan, Bolton, Blackburn and Fulham have shown what can be done with good scouting and building team spirit.

Money hasn't ruined Newcastle, if they'd invested in a strong youth policy and bought players for the long-term they might not be in this mess. They've always looked for a big name Messiah to do the job for them rather than building a strong squad which is why a couple of injuries has always almost destroyed them.

There's a lot all Premiership clubs can learn from studying Newcastle's demise.

I don't think money ruined the game itself but its messed about with the expectations of fans, like Pav for instance. Had we got him for say £4.5m would some fans be moaning about his return? or would they be a bit more understanding about him needing time to settle in, rest or any of the excuses thats floating about. Same for Bent and Bentley is been reported that he has had personal problem would we be a bit more supportive had we signed him for £8m? or Bent for £6m? as for players wages I don't have much of a problem with that when you consider some of the horrific injuries we've seen over the years, players deserve thier pay.
I do think that clubs should not spend what they can't afford because the main casualties are the fans. Players can move to other clubs and get on with it but with fans, the hurt stays for life and becomes part of the club's history

Unfortunately i think football has lost its soul since the Premier League began. Football has become more about money than glory now. Footballers are now superstars who earn millions. And thats the reason we see so much cheating in the game now, players diving and trying to get the upper hand. The cost of failure is too much for these mega rich footballers. Its the sole reason why the top 4 has for the most part remained in the top 4. Players refuse to take on the challenge of joining a club like Spurs or Villa, and they take the bigger money instead. There seems to be less players like Ginola who play for the love of football, to fall in love with a club and become a hero amongst the fans. Riquelme is another great example. All the big stars want silly money and will do whatever it takes (cheating included) to gain success. Rather than play for the love of success and glory.

Shame.

A newcastle fan is probably more than within his rights to moan about money ruining the game and indeed his club though.

He's seen his club squander millions on poor players and mercenries. Seen his club taken over by a multi billionaire, make poor decisions and drive them into the ground.

I don't see why it is hypocrisy, its not him that's spending the money, its him watching his club descend into farce due to money.
