It may have been refereeing insanity. But the report makes it sound more like one of those giant rumbles when players on both teams have literally lost it. None of that John "hold me back, mates" Terry pseudo-menace. No, these players were in the genuine red mist lost-it zone.

South American football seems particularly brilliant for such mayhem - although that may be casual and ignorant racial stereotyping on my part. :wink:

One of my favourite all-time footie moments involved Carlos Valderrama - he of the truly outstanding barnet. He's now a coach in Colombia, and he was so furious at a refereeing decision that he wandered onto the pitch waving a 50,000 pesos note at the referee. See the photo here:
