What price for the pair - maybe £30m?

If Alli, Wimmer and Ings (£5m each) are our only other signings, I can see that being just about affordable

£45m to raise through sales of Capoue, Holtby, Carroll, Soldado, Chiriches, Paulinho etc.

Both are homegrown too, which is a bonus

Would be amazing if this happens. Although the only way I see Southampton selling Schneiderlin to us at a reasonable fee is if he entering the final 2 years of his contract and is refusing to sign a new one. And I doubt we will sign Jay Rodriguez until he has proven his fitness.

Dembele will be the one to tempt Southampton win - he played for Koeman at AZ remember.

I'd keep Townsend. Word from inside the club is that he's absolutely devastating in training, and there's just a psychological issue to overcome re matches - a 'Bale curse' type thing that it's worth persisting with.
Problem is we're not seeing him improve.. AT ALL. It would be fine if we saw glimpses of him improving but its same old same old.

But if it's psychological it won't be incremental - it will just click. His England and QPR performances show what he's capable.

It's the pressure of playing for us - the thing he's been desperate to do for 15 years - that seems to be the thing that overwhelms him.

Last summer, Southampton allegedly promised Schneiderlin that that he would be sold one year later as long as he knuckled down.

I can only see Spurs sign Rodriguez after seeing him in a competitive game or two as he's not played for a year - not even sure a medical would be enough.

Think he's still got another year on his contract, so the deal must be subject to him playing for Southampton - may be last PL game of the season or in pre-season to prove his fitness. .

it largely depends on personal preference. clearly the guy will get interest from the top, top team in the league. but for a variety of reasons he may not be compelled to join them. CL may not be everything to him. money, etc. he can look at man utd and decide he loathes their manager. he can look at Citeh and not feel certain he'll always get a game. he can look at Arsenal and again, think there's no certainty he'll play every week. there's loads of variables that we are not privy to. he may also be very fond of Pooch and his methods. may feel that at Spurs he would play every week. who knows?

is it unlikely given where he's at? yeah. but stranger things have happened.

I for sure don't want him to come in and not nail down that starting spot and fall out of form.

His injury and contract situation are the only reasons we've got a chance of signing him. He'd be out of our league/price range otherwise. Just think how much better a player he is than Welbeck for instance.

I'm concerned Poch wants him so badly he may be overlooking a bit of reason in continued pursuit. Sure, Rodriguez could be sold for a considerably low fee this summer if he doesn't play a minute this season, but we'd still be parting with several million pounds for a player we have absolutely no proof of ever being able to perform at a top flight level again, and especially one whose game is based on speed and runs in behind.

I get that I don't know all the facts pertaining to Rodriguez, but from the outside it just looks like a very poor move, especially when you take into consideration a) how limited Poch's ideas for CB were last summer and b) how much stubbornness he's displayed this season with his team selections. Certainly elicits concern for me at least that he's more caught up in an idea rather than reality.

Tha. 2nd bit doesn't surprise me. I've heard a couple players say he's the best in training. And at the start of last season he looked really good. If he could bring anything like that form or England form back he'd be worth having and a very good option I'm sceptical but hopefully someone can work their magic.

Agreed. When you look at how he performed at the beginning of last season with as much zip, confidence, and directness; as well as how he's continued to perform for England; it only follows inevitably that you must take into consideration factors which may be affecting him at Spurs. Whether or not someone lends any credibility to the notion that there's a psychological factor involved, regardless the fact is that it all points to something involved with being at Spurs as an obstacle.

Personally I believe it to be both tactically and pscyhologically (as I see a clearly unconfident player out there), and ultimately my concern then is if Spurs really is the best place for him, even if he does want desperately to succeed at this club. As much as I'd like for him to stay, you do have to wonder if moving to a club such as Saints would be beneficial to him as he could learn to breathe a bit more during matches, relax a bit, enjoy his football, and do his thing. It certainly also helps that Saints play with considerably more space than we do and are afforded, which suits his style.

I'd love for him to stay at Spurs and go on to succeed, but sometimes people want things so badly it becomes an obstacle rather than a motivation.

Maybe, but if we spend say £5m/£10m on a player who is permanantly injured, he's no longer a bargain !

Why sign the scouting team if we are just going after Southampton players? It just doesnt make any sense...

Best in training? Is that really an indication of how someone is going to perform in a team on the day? Or more like a bit of individual brillance which looks impressive in the moment in relaxed circumstances? More like that latter for me.

Until Townsend starts to play like he's in a team, and not so much for himself, I think its pretty irrelevant if he's the best in training.

If rumours are true that Arsenal can get Carvalho signed I think it really opens the door for us to get Schneiderlin in.

I thought you meant Ricardo at first!

Even if they do sign him, I still feel there will be real competition for Schneiderlin's signature. I think every team in the league other than Chelsea (and Arsenal if they sign Carvalho) would sign him if they could. I also wouldn't rule out him staying at Southampton. Our only hope is the Poch factor plays its part
