I really don't think he's going to be a regular first choice. I could be completely wrong and he could develop his game no end next season, but that's just it - that's what it would take. I see no signs of that happening whatsoever. He's poor off the ball, very little work rate, and on it he hogs it. Yes he's a good pacey/direct option from the bench, if we want to mix things up but as a starter? Not for me, not the way his game is at the moment.

Problem is I think he wants first team football and could see him entertaining a move.

Agreed, if he wants first team football anytime soon I think he'll take the chance, and I also agree that he should not be currently starting for Spurs barring a considerable improvement to his game. However, would he start at Saints? I'm not sure he would, and I don't think even with both clubs having Europa that he'd necessarily see more football with them than he would with us. He's not better than Mane or Tadic, especially not atm, so I don't see him butting in there for any more time.

But if it's true they were genuinely interested last season, and Townsend hasn't really pushed on much if at all this season, I have to concede that I suspect Spurs would be much more open to him going in the other way than we were last summer if we do still want Schneiderlin and/or Rodriguez.

Oh god... Not again.

Not excited this time round either. Both good players, nothing exceptional. Need better.

While I would be loathe to let Townsend go due to the connections with our club and how he performed at the start of last season and for England, I just can't see him replicating it for us. I would reluctantly let him go if it would help improve our first team elsewhere but there's more to shift. But if we had to see him I think rather than Southampton Man City would be a better option to take him. It is widely reported they are desperate for homegrown players they have a load of money, and players like Barkley and Sterling would be far too expensive. They are looking for English players that are proven, they could easily come in for Townsend and throw more than 20m at us due to their urgency, who else cant they get. I think that would be a good way to fund the MS move if we're going for him. It would also be appealing for Townsend as they have CL football.

Not really overly impressed by J Rod esp as he hasn't played for a whole season but if Poch wants...

Man City chucking tons of money at us so that Townsend could be their token Englishman is almost a dream scenario for me.

Interesting point about City, although I'd be surprised to see them spend that much on him. They will indeed be desperate though, as any young player would be mad to agree to go to them after the way predecessors have been treated recently. I do indeed think they'll have to drop the big bucks to expand, and you're right they very well may have to look for any given squad option.

Personally, I hold out hope for Townsend. I still don't think he's been used appropriately by us, and I think his England performances are testament to that. We keep cramming him into these congested systems, with no playmakers to create space, no other dynamic players on the pitch, and ask him to create his own space while fans moan every time he cranks back to take a shot. But anyway, that's another conversation for another thread and of course my own opinion, so I can't help but concede that I wouldn't be surprised to see the club use him as a fund generator/makeweight if we do indeed have big plans made such as going in for Schneiderlin.

I could see us sweetening things with Townsend as well.
Perfect timing to hand over some sweets: Townsend, Kaboul, Adebayor, Paulinho, Soldado, Chiriches plus £30 mill. :D

It's either that or £20 mill straight

Have a sneaky suspicion they might accept Capoue as part of the deal, albeit for a relative pittance. Still very much doubt that Schneiderlin would choose to come, but he'd be a dream signing.

Plausible no? The 'top' English players would be far too expensive and crazy to just be part of their squad and rot on their bench. They're not going to buy absolute rubbish. Like with Rose they want players who could be in their squad Townsend fits that. Play CL football and get a major pay hike and would probably back himself to get in their first team. We could realistically milk em for around 25m such is their urgency.

Money and Capoue would be the dream scenario. He is still an international and PL player so don't think they'd turn their nose up

Personally, having watched him this season from a non-biased point of view (I thought there was no chance of him coming to us), I think he's the second best CDM in the league, after Matic.

An no, I'm not counting Yaya as a CDM.

Have you watched Schneiderlin this season????

He's one of the best CDMs in Europe now.

I agree with you on Rodriguez though.

I'm very hopeful that it's true. Ghosto absolutely nailed it on the Dele Alli deal, so lets hope he's got it on this one too.

i wish my memory worked like that *has no recollection of this even though it may have been me posting it at the time*

TBH I thought it was the Goat who called it very early in January, then it all kind of died down and then they all said it was a done deal.
I know the Goat bleaped about it on 4th Jan, but no idea about after that, so he could be right.

Ghostofarmo posted on Jan 30 that we had beaten Newcastle and Liverpool to Alli, and that he would be loaned back to Dons, shortly before it was announced. And it was definitely you who posted it (y)

I probably...actually definately haven't seen him as much as yourself this season. I really rate his awareness and ability to intercept, i think he's a good player probably a bit better than good. I don't know who I would like more, but whilst being very good, he just doesn't stand out to me as a 'must have'.

Yeah, that's right actually, and it was a crypted one. A&C was even rather benevolent and didn't let it drag on as long as he used to. I wonder which entity of "The Goat" that was then.

Dembele will be the one to tempt Southampton win - he played for Koeman at AZ remember.

I'd keep Townsend. Word from inside the club is that he's absolutely devastating in training, and there's just a psychological issue to overcome re matches - a 'Bale curse' type thing that it's worth persisting with.
