A couple of friday lunchtime news stories about players that, shall we say are less popular among the fan base.

One thing I would say reading them, is yes they earn unreal amounts of money, but that’s not necessarily their fault, it’s the business their in.

Secondary, we don’t know what’s going on in a players private life and what impact this is having on their performance.

I suppose what I am saying is, as long as they are wearing the badge, putting in effort, then as fans we should be behind them, encouraging them to succeed.

In the case of Sissoko, he’s clearly knuckled down since Poch’s criticism last season so maybe he deserves a little bit of credit.

That bit about Sissoko won't go down well with the experts on here.

A lot of the rumours about Lamela were pretty disgusting. The guy was obviously going through hell. Hope he proves his worth again and that we don’t sell him.

Sissoko is a funny one, he’s billed as a complete waste of space by most fans, but he clearly isn’t. Spurs fans love a good scapegoat though don’t we. Jenas, Ade, BAE, Paulinho. They’ve all been scape goats at one time or another. Now it’s Sissoko’s turn.

No, and I’m not saying he’s out of this world, he isn’t, but he’s clearly better than how he gets rated on here and obviously a big part of the squad, so he deserves some slack imho

Its pretty sad in a way, I think that when we have an iffy result and people can't see why, he gets the blame by default.

The Southampton game was a classic example of that, the shit he was getting was laughable, even more so when he was one of our better players that match.

He's only one of our better players when we are awful. Effectively the bar has to be lowered for him to shine.

The guy works his bollocks off every single game. Poch clearly wants him to do a certain job, it’s not Sissoko’s fault that he’s not on the pitch to score worldies and dance through the defence.

He’s there to do the running and the donkey work.

Benni was a scapegoat? He was arguably our most consistent player during the Redknapp years.

You're missing the point bud, it was about scapegoating him.

The point that I am making is even if he plays to his normal level, and everyone else has a bad game, that does not eradicate the glaring holes in his game. Just because everyone has played worse does not mean he has played well. He just sticks out less.

When it comes to criticising players, the problem is usually that some fans are over-the-top in the language they use

It's okay to voice an opinion along the lines of "Just don't think he's good enough", but it's definitely not okay to 'F-and-blind' a player just because they lack ability

And booing a player is never good

PS Only caveat is if a player has seriously disrespected the fans; I'm looking at you Mr Campbell

I think the saddest thing is seeing some of the bile directed right at the players on social media.

I imagine it’s pretty difficult to care or bond with the club you play for when this happens. Puts me off football to be honest.

For the record, despite his undoubted effort and engine, I think Sissoko is barely passable as a footballer and I'm still baffled as to why we signed him.

But he's here and works hard for the team so give him his due.

Never got this

It's really not healthy to get so wound up about things you have no control over

Top 4 footballer

That's the problem really; we've come a long way in a short period of time, where anything below 'top-drawer' doesn't cut it

I reckon he could still do a job for a mid-table PL club

And he would absolutely boss the Championship if he could be bothered with that tier of football
