Exclusive: Musa Yahaya completes loan switch to Portugal

Nigeria under-20 attacker Musa Yahaya has received the all clear to join Portuguese second division side, Portimonense on loan from Tottenham Hotspur after his International Transfer Certificate (ITC) came through.

Fcnaija.com has been reliably informed that the player’s ITC was sent by the Nigeria Football Federation on Friday to the club, and it has subsequently been forwarded to the Portuguese Football Federation and the Portuguese League Body.

The 18-year old had been on the fringes at White Hart Lane since joining the club from the Muntunchi Academy in Nigeria, but he has now completed his loan move to Portugal, and could be available for their Segunda Liga game against Academico Viseu on Saturday.

He is however expected to return to Spurs at the end of the season.

I'm so confused by this whole thing, is he with us or not?

He couldn't sign his pro contract with us till this month (because of his age/work permits etc.)

So looks like we've just finalised that, and now loaned him out for 6 months.

Interesting, with the ITK saying he wasn't that highly considered here, and we're letting him go.

There has been ITK and youth watchers with contacts to our youth coaches all saying we didn't sign him in the end for a mix of he wasn't that great and work permit issues. I would be very surprised if he ended up signing but pleasantly surprised as he was great in the game I saw him play.

Going way left field here, but you don't suppose that staff were instructed to play him down to anyone and everyone to prevent anyone poaching him. Sounds far fetched!

I don't think so because the same coaches talked up other players that are too young to sign a pro deal, so are just as easily poached and wouldn't have work permit issues, so would be more attractive to other teams. My personal belief, is that we aren't signing him due to WP issues and everyone is just using the "not that great" line to convince people (and probably themselves) that is is no real loss.

I went back and looked at this the other day: the only ITK mentioned that there were work permit issues. He's now 18, which I believe is the minimum age he could have officially transferred to us unless for exceptional circumstances, and he's gone out on loan in Portugal only because of work permit issues.

He'll probably go out on loan again next season, after which if he's played well he'll have earned a cap or two for Nigeria, and the work permit issue is solved. We'd have shot him off to another EU nation on loan if we worried about it a work permit long-term.

I wonder why he's had difficulty getting work permit when Man City have had no issues with Iheanacho who is the same age, and both appeared together for Nigeria in the U18 World Cup. Seeing how Iheanacho has progressed it's a shame we've not been allowed to see Yahaya do the same. Actually Iheanacho would have been useful in our current setup.

Exceptional talent rule can be applied, but it's supposedly difficult. They succeeded and we failed (Iheanacho has since picked up an international cap).

Iheanacho has been through the Nigerian youth setup for 6 or 7 years by the looks of it, is it a similar story for Yahaya?

Iheanacho won the Player of Tournament awarded or whatever it was at that World Cup which earned him special dispensation

O Jogo reporting today that Nigerian U17 champion, Musa Yahaya, has signed for Portimonense until the end of the season.

Happened earlier this month, it seams.

No mention of a loan. Don't know how reliable these guys are but doesn't seem like he ended up signing with us.

The "until the end of the season." would suggest a loan. The official site says as much as well.

Seems pretty clear he's joined Portimonense... seems pretty unclear that he's got anything at all to do with us anymore.

I've seen reports that it is a 6 month contract, so until the end of the season, doesn't necessarily mean a loan. It would be very odd for a team to announce a signing without mentioning it was a loan and the team they are loaning him from.
