Although I share the general happiness here about this news, sadly, if our recent experiences should have taught us anything, its that a player signing a new contract means nothing more than a pay rise for them. If they want to leave in the future, they will, no matter how long their contract runs for.

While you're totally right I think it's a good sign that this deal has been signed so early in the summer. I'd usually expect most players agents to negotiate for as long as they can or put the feelers out to bigger clubs, but in this case it looks like Hugo is more than happy to stay and give things a shot under the new manager.

This has come right out of the blue to me, it sends out a positive message to the rest of the squad too. Well done Spurs!

Probably because they have more extended careers. They know that they are just as likely to pick up a lucrative contract at 32 as they are at 27
I wonder whether this will still hold true for sweeper-keepers like Hugo, whose game is more dependent on speed and mobility than some of the traditional lard-arsed keepers....

I
I don't think many people think he's here for the next five years...I know I certainly don't take his new deal as meaning that he'll be here for 5 years.

I take it as a formal statement of his confidence in the club, and am celebrating that he'll be here for the new season and is on board with Project Pochettino. It's also a huge weight off our shoulders that we no longer need to worry about losing him for a fee less than his true value if his does decide to move on.

After the debacle of last season, to get our most high profile player who's in the peak of his career to sign a 5 year deal is nothing short of a coup.
As he's committed his future, I expect him to grow old and die at Spurs.

NICE! These comments say it all to me as a fan and should also say a lot to potential new signings as well:

"Everything is clear in my head and if I’ve signed a new contract it’s because I trust the Club and I’m sure we will progress in a positive way."

Negativity here over this is just bizarre?!
Best news for a very long time, Lloris is quality and it shows that Poch has convinced him of the vision enough to make him sign.

Worst case scenario, we hold all the power in any transfer negotiations from now and for a further 3 years.

Thank you Hugo for making my week.

I don't think it's a coincidence that this has happened shortly after the players started working directly with Pochettino. I'd suggest that the deal was broadly agreed some weeks ago and that Lloris managed to delay signing it until he'd actually eyeballed Maurice and his minions and spent a few days assessing life under the new regime.

EDIT: see reply from newbie below.

What a great professional he must be. I really hope he's staying because he likes the club and Poch. But I guess it's just as likely that his missus loves shopping in The West End ;)

Now that he has signed a 5-year contract, should things not be as nice as he hoped, and he wants to go, the club will stand to make a very nice profit.

Great news and a great keeper, just a shame it's released on the day the scum are likely going to announce the Sanchez signing.

Don't mean to sound pessimistic but it's a wee bit deflating.

"We know where we have to improve, the Club also knows and there is a feeling and a confident connection between the Club and the players.”

clearly expecting some decent signings then!
