Safe standing sections at Borussia Dortmund and Werder Bremen

A new report calling for safe standing areas at football grounds in England and Wales has been launched by the Football Supporters' Federation.

Standing areas were outlawed after the Hillsborough disaster in 1989 when 96 fans died in a crush at the stadium.

FSF head of development Steven Powell said: "I think it's a very well-argued case for safe standing.

"I only hope that the Government and the football authorities sit up and take notice."

A poll of 2,100 fans by the Football Fans Census in March found that 92% of those supporters surveyed wanted clubs to bring back standing areas.

And the idea has the backing of former Sports Minister Kate Hoey, who has said a rational reappraisal of this issue is overdue.

The official inquiry into the Hillsborough tragedy, conducted by Lord Taylor, blamed poor policing and inadequate facilities but the main recommendation was for the introduction of all-seater stadia and the removal of perimeter fencing. Standing areas are in operation in certain parts of Europe, including Germany's Bundesliga.

the debate continues

That last paragraph is just repeating the previous one!

I'm not sure why standing is so popular, If they did it, it'd have to be in such away that it's comfortable and safe so that each person would have room and people who weren't supposed to be in one section couldn't get in.

Standing would only cause people to be annoyed that I was in front of them.
It's bad enough sitting, let alone standing.

Makes me feel like a right numpty, as I'm usually more concerned about who's view I'm blocking than whats actually going on, on the pitch.

Standing areas will be good for football. It will allow more fans in and will generate a more lively atmosphere. I'm all for it.

Then you can continue sitting. The problem with all seating stadiums is that not everyone wants to sit down & most people at some points during the game do stand & therefore block the view of elderly or less able people who dont want to or are unable stand for too long. Grounds should be given standing areas so those who want to stand can do so & those who want to sit can do so also.

It can also be argued that organised standing is safer than seating in the event of an evacuation it is much quicker to empty a standing area than a seating one. If an area is organised with a limited number of people allowed then there should be no problems in terms of overcrowding

Alas, despite the advantages or bringing back standing areas i dont see it happening:roll:

its not about if you agree or if you don't, its all about choice. you can stand at ninian park cardiff so why not WHL. you can also stand at all the festivals going on this summer and most of those people are twice as wasted as a football crowd. its all about choice and we should be treated equally and not singled out just because we watch football...
