Major criticism is defense on the counter. They ripped us open with some clever play by moving the ball to the right flank which was woefully exposed again and again.

A fortunate victory. Newcastle will be fine if they play like that all season.

I do.think we need 3 at the back though. Would make things far more secure.

Thank fuck for that. Scrappy and worryingly Kane still looks out of form. Moura looked ok, he could be a handful this season. Sissoko/Dier midfield is fucking awful. Serge is just as shit as last season.

Tough second half, but I will take 3 points any way we can get them. Difficult first fixture especially with half the team only returning to training a week or so ago. Aurier continued to look like an absolute liability, though.

How aurier gets picked instead of kwp is beyond me

Well a good three points to start the season. We looked very tired at the end so hopefully we will pick up our stamina over the next couple of weeks. Can enjoy the rest of the games now and the cricket.

Dembele is still the first name on the sheet for a centre midfield position for me, regardless of the majority on here wanting him gone asap.

Son looked sharp - why didn't he start? Hope Moura's injury (groin?) isn't too serious. Wish Dembele had started.

Fixed your post because Dier was very useful.

I don’t say this because he didn’t score but I’m worried for Kane this season. He hasn’t looked fit since he came back from his injury and needed a rest, couldn’t the club see that?

I’m still confident he will get a lot of goals as usual but his all round game won’t be as good

We should bite the bullet and give him a few weeks away from the game. At this point he's no good to anyone and it possibly shortening his career by running his body into the ground

Really love the player that Moura promises to be. The jury is still out whether he can cope with the intensity of the league however. Tends to get lost in the midst a little.

@shelfmonkey , you don't think we will get better than that performance today?

We definitely will. Like said previously, we didn't play well when we won here in the first game of the season last season either and it was a similar performance to this one.

Definitely agree. The trouble we have though is that the drop off from Kane is staggering (even if he’s only fit for 60minutes atm).
Someone else said they were surprised Kane started but we literally only have Llorente as a backup option. Not sure what else Poch can go with.
I think that’s the area we let ourselves down in this transfer window as much as we need a creative CM. Kane really needs some (top 6quality) help.

Because removing a striker and adding a defender just adds more pressure on the defence since we'll have even less out balls available.

Kane was awful all game, hled nothing and gave the ball away.
Better to take Kane off for TA and put our pace (Moura) central.

We had a spell last season when Kane was injured and our strikers looked really fluid. Playing Kane in his current condition is anti fluid.

He's the best, though we might get the best out of him the season overall by using him like today.
