Try to watch the full 90 minutes and then pass comment.

Yes we won but for 3/4's of the match we were awful and all over the place at the back.

A very lucky but welcome 3 points

Sounds just like Man United last night

New season, new pre-match rituals, possibly. About 20 minutes before kick off I was sat there in front of the telly with my one year old who promptly threw up on me, forcing me to change Spurs tops. She’s ill at the moment but she should be better by the next game. So do I wear the old Spurs top for the rest of the season or get her to throw up on me pre-match for the next 37 games? Or both?

I'm more curious to know what measures you will take to get her to throw up 37 more times this season.

I'll take the 3 points and run. Huge win after a negative week. Weird game due to the lack of fitness and sharpness.

Special mention to Dele for coming back so fit after holiday. Hugo was great too.

Hopefully a weeks training and this game will help others catch up ahead of Fulham.

Sissoko and Aurier worry me greatly though. Hope we don't have to use that combo too often through the season.

Seems like the rumours of Dele being a highly elite endurance athlete are true. He’s like a gazelle

Hopefully nothing to give her a serious eating disorder for the rest of her life.

Although, if it means winning the league...

I’ll go with wearing the old top.

3/4? That's ridiculous. Dominated the first half and in a second half on the back foot we still only conceded two meaningful chances, while Dele and Sissoko also both had great opportunities to put it beyond doubt. It wasn't our best but it certainly wasn't awful, albeit there were a couple of poor performances in there. We still had 60% possession, a couple of hundred more passes and equal shots (with 3 more on target), so to say we were awful for 3/4 of the back is nothing short of mental.

Both. Definitely both.

Just show her this or any other match day thread.

The fullbacks contributed massively to our defensive troubles. Half the time when Newcastle won the ball and were on the attack Davies or Aurier weren't even in the picture. Actually think we should have changed to 3 at the back, as we were't doing anything at the other end anyway.
I agree - Aurier at one point was in the final third and was nowhere. Sissoko was tracking back and covering him, which was giving me nightmares. Seriously I just don't get what Aurier's problem is - At PSG he looked like a good option to replace Walker, so far he has proven to be a bit of a donkey. Davies had an unusually bad game for him, but comfort in the knowledge that he can play a whole lot better!

Agreed, thought we looked rusty yet still firmly the better team in the first half.

Second half we still look dangerous but definitely leggy as the match wore on.

Overall, first game of the season, we did what was needed. Nothing to concern anyone in that performance, a typical season opener for me.

I think she was trying to recreate the kit we wore today lol

Yeah it was a real worry, not to mention when their Chelsea loanee (forgot his name) was free on the left and Aurier was in the middle of the pitch. To me Aurier is just a mistake waiting to happen. I'm fine with him filling in when needed I guess but I just don't trust the guy.

I like Davies but I'm not gonna lie, I still much prefer Rose. I just find Davies a little tame.

The result was clearly better than the performance but I'll take three points all day long if we are under par on the day. Let's put it into perspective, it's only the first game with many not having much of a break and pre-season after the WC, so I'm not ready to press the panic button yet and I'm optimistic that we will improve considerably.

I though the woodwork was one of our better performers today, saving us twice and having a hand in our first goal, and on the subject of woodwork, Poch looks as though he has shed quite a bit of timber and has had a really good pre-season, leaner and meaner, perhaps he fancies a run out himself and that's the reason for no further signings !!!!! We could do with him out there, and he would certainly make sure no-ones work ethic and efforts dropped out there conducting the play.....

I haven’t seen the match yet. Was Alli playing in the midfield 3 in a 4-3-3?
Yes he started left side cm with Sissoko right of Dier but had some flexibility with Eriksen dropping in. Until Moura went off for Dembele, then Alli moved higher up on the left.

Very glad for 3 points.
Not a great team performance.
Sissoko is NOT good enough.
Aurier, mixed bag. Great cross, but goes missing and at times some dodgy defensive work.
Sanchez. mixed bag aswell. Cost us a goal.
It's all relative. Someone quite correctly pointed out he would have been in that Newcastle team today and they will almost certainly be top 10 this season. So as an option while we wait for Winks, Dembélé and Wanyama to get back up to speed, I don't think he's all that bad.

A natural reaction to how the transfer window panned out but seriously hope your daughter is ok.

If we could have the Rose from a couple of seasons ago, he would be my first choice every day of the week. Davies is a bit Mr dependable - not outstanding, but generally reliable.

Dier...liability

I have to pick up the Dier commentary in CM now that BC is no longer with us

On the whole I don't believe that Dier is particularly suited to CM and most definitely has his limitations, I though he was actually ok today, his distribution whilst not spectacular was ok. He also seemed to be a lot more switched on positionally, not letting players ghost past him all the time.
