The final position of teams will be decided by these criteria, in the following order:

Head-to-head record in the group
Points in the match(es) between the teams in question
Goal difference in those matches
Goals scored in those matches
If teams still have an equal ranking, the criteria are reapplied but only to matches between the teams in question to determine their final rankings. This only applies if there are more than two teams level on points
If teams are still level, it comes down to goal difference in all group matches, followed by goals scored, fair play conduct in the group stage, and finally Uefa national team coefficient rankings

Spain it is. To be honest I think I'd rather play Spain than Croatia right now.

With the reappearance of Wilshere I'm switching my allegiance to Italy. I'm something like 1/16th Italian (which is what? An eighth of my cock?) so I think I qualify.

I think its funny, UEFA sets the groups up with a seeding system to get the top teams concentrated towards the final and it's all gone tits up.

Yea Italy Germany and France all top their groups and that's their "reward"

Harsh, but if a team from the side of death wins it they will have deserved it.

I backed Switzerland before the tournament at nearly 60/1. They've received precisely zero buzz as a serious darkhorse, but they are every bit as balanced in their first XI than any other team in that half of the upcoming draw. Their back 5 is fantastic (zero goals allowed from open play so far), they have a good midfield with Behrami and Xhaka, and there is creativity with Shaqiri, Mehmedi, Blezmaili. They just haven't got any product from Embolo or Seferovic. They had nearly 60% possession against France last Sunday.

As you say, the Swiss problem is that they have no end product whatsoever. Seferovic was absolutely terrible in the first two games and Embolo is very unproven. If they are to get past Poland and then Croatia in the QF at least one of them has to turn on the style in a big way IMO.

Ouch. England should've won the damn group and Italy would've done better to come 2nd. Feels a bit silly having to play the harder teams because you win the group. Luck of the draw I s'pose.
At least this way we avoid all the, "we'll never have a better chance of winning it"

I wouldn't disagree. Italy are perfectly set up to exploit Spain the same way Croatia did, and have what is normally an even meaner defence. It will be a fascinating game.

Now the group stage is finished I think Uefa are entitled to consider the new structure a success.

Yep. It's produced some great matches in the final group fixtures. Miles better than the dead rubbers we usually get at this point.
