Whilst Dembele is a hugely important player for us, I feel that it's the lack of midfield options whenever he is out that have seriously hurt us and why we seem to be so relian on him. Are we a one man team? No! Do we lack real strength in possibly the most important area on the pitch? Yes!

How pleasing then that he's missing for the first 4 games of next season due to his own stupidity.

Fucking marvellous.

I think his importance is being vastly over stated. We've played awfully with him in the team before now but as often happens (IMO) sometimes just not being in the side makes you a better player if results aren't good. You could say the same about Alli. Maybe if they'd have been in the side we'd have done better but you never know.

Poch was clear in his post match comments. It was mentality. We should have got the required points against WBA, Southampton and Newcastle regardless of which players we had available............providing they were 'at it' and they weren't.

Since October without Mousa Dembele starting: 8 games played: 1 win, 5 losses, 2 draws (5 out of 24 points). Over the course of a full season, that would have you dead last in the league in 20th place.

The guy is a top player. Everyone in the squad recognizes it. The manager recognizes it. Most supporters recognize it. He will also miss the first four games of next season and can't play every game due to lingering hip issues.

It's absolutely imperative we buy an experienced CM to rotate in his place next season. My choice has always been Axel WItsel, as he has the ability to play both the holding and box to box roles. His contract is running down, he has mates in the squad, and has lots of international and CL experience.

or rescue Schneiderlin from Manure... hardly had a look in this season and with their revolving door policy I wouldn't be surprised if he's available.

I agree with the OP. We are dogshite without Dembele. Yes, a better backup would make his absence more palatable but there are few that possess his particular traits. We don't have a physical presence to replace him, and there is hardly a player in the world that can maintain possession like he can. So, I put it at more like 65/35 that Dembele is the tits versus Ryan Mason is an awful player.

Unless Dembele could single handedly motivate the other 10 players on the pitch, I don't think him being out there would have changed a whole lot.

He's obviously a hugely important player for us, but our players simply crumbled since the Chelsea match. It's understandable for a match after it (considering how devastating it must have been and also the emotion of that Chelsea match), but in the end more professionalism was required.

While I do believe that Dembele is important for us, the biggest problem other than the mentality issues is probably that our only cover has been Ryan Mason who is awful beyond belief. It's the lack of proper cover with Bentaleb injured/frozen out and Alli suspended that's cost us. We would not have lost the Soton game with Dembele on the pitch and I doubt we concede five goals against Newcastle as well.

Alli is the bigger loss.
But together, they are the aggressive, high press that has defined our play this season.

Without them, we lose the bite and become the insipid, spineless Spurs we know and love. Shows that players like Tom Carroll, for all they might offer technically, change our style of play too much to have a future.

He's one of the few experienced heads in the squad and a top player. He's obviously important as hell.

We did manage to pummel Man City 4-1 without him though, but that was with Alli deputising instead of Mason or Carroll.

When Mousa's out I've much preferred Alli dropping back. I know we need him in those attacking areas to support Kane but the boy puts up more fight and is technically better than Mason. Shame we were without either.

As many others have said, the last few games just highlight our lack of squad depth in midfield. Even if Dier were to be out we've got nobody to cover that job. Could do with 2 strong players to cover for the holding mids.

We are playing in CL in a few months (supposedly), and we can't even defeat a relegated team with 10 men.
That's not down to the lack of one ageing, injury prone, one trick pony player.
He is important. He isn't fudging Messiah.
