he has not been a good player for us and continues to make several mistakes or bad judgements in any game he plays.

I think that's rubbish frankly! He's as good a defender as Chimbonda, more consistent at least. I can't remember him making any mistakes either, let alone several a game.

Zokora did well at the back against the spammers.

Please tell me that's a joke. I'm one of Zokora's biggest defenders but he let his man go which gave him an easy pass to set up a tap in. Dawson didn't really do well either.

Seriously? If you can't remember Salty making a mistake, i'll assume you've never seen him play over 90 minutes. I will go as far as to say he makes at least 3 or 4 mistakes nearly every time he plays regarding either a dangerous misplaced pass in his own half or a winger getting past him too easily.

Whilst Chimbonda has his faults, he's better in pretty much every department to Salty. The only aspect of Salty's game that's better than Chimbonda's is that he knows he's a defender first and foremost and doesn't get caught out of position several times. Chimbonda is much better in the air, a better tackler, a better passer, better going forward etc. There's a reason why teams like Chelsea were interested in him and not Stalteri. Salty's passing is awful and whenever anyone is running at him, i along with quite a few others in the Park Lane, fear the worst. On the other hand, if Chimbonda had Stalteri's attitude, he'd be a massive player for us.

Like i said earlier, I admire the bloke and while he plays for us he will always have my full support. The goal against West Ham has made him a bit of a ledge and i reckon its because he gives 100% that the fickle fuckers amongst us haven't turned on him. But i can't really take your post seriously if you think he hasn't made a mistake, let alone several mistakes for us, and costly mistakes too. The first 2 that spring to mind are Sunderland and Arsenal away the season before last i think - probably cost us 4 points. I like the guy because of his attitude, he's just a poor defender, or at least he has been for us.

----------Robbo
-----Dawson Zokora Chimbonda
Lennon Jenas Malbranque Bale
---------Berbatov-----------
-----Defoe------Bent-------

Now does that seem familiar? We could start a match the way we finished the previous one! However, Ramos will probably start with Keane

Look if SS57 can pick 12 surely I can have two Bales:)

If we did play this formation, I'm guessing it's more likely that Chimbonda would be one of the back three instead of a hastily-assembled clone of Gareth Bale.

Bale looks busy.

Interesting formation though. I suppose in this sort of game, meaning no disrespect to Aalborg we could try something different from the 4 4 2 which I'd expect in a prem game.

Ramos has definitely looked to put out an attacking style on the park so the three at the back could be a starter.

We may even see some ressies step up to the plate.

It can only be 3 combinations

1. stalteri chimbonda dawson bale
2. lee chimbonda dawson bale
3. stalteri chimbonda dawson lee

I would go for option 1

Younes Kaboul and Jermain Defoe are out of Thursday night's UEFA Cup clash against Aalborg at the Lane.

Head Coach Juande Ramos reported this afternoon that defender Younes is struggling with a groin problem and striker Jermain suffering from illness.

Otherwise, the same players remain out - all defenders - in Ledley King, Benoit Assou-Ekotto (both knee injuries), Anthony Gardner and Ricardo Rocha (both ankle).

I'm liking this clone idea that was suggested earlier in the thread. Let's not stop at Bale, Let's do a few of the lads: Jenas, Defoe?

Not only would it confuse the opposition:
"Who's picking up Jenas"
"Me"
"Shit - he just scored. How did that happen?!?"

But it would allow Defoe to pass to a teammate:
"And Defoe finds himself, shoots, scores!"

I'm really just amusing myself here aren't I......

At least you didn't clone Robbie Keane. I think 12 of him is enough.

"groin" strain eh? Convenient.

Dervitte please. Not even sure he's played a return game, so if not him guess it I would like Zokora there.. Lee left back, Bale left wing, and Steed moved into the middle.

That's a ridiculous exaggeration, mate. In the season we should have finished 4th, I can remember the Sunderland one and the Arsenal one as the stand-out mistakes that were definitely his fault. Yeah he gives the ball away, but so did King, Dawson, Lee, Davids, Jenas, Carrick, Lennon, Tainio, Defoe, Keane, Mido - just about everyone. Especially that **** Ziegler.

Stalteri was absolutely hounded by people on this site as was Lee - when if truth be known they are two of the best fullbacks we've had in recent years. And with those to in place, we had one of the least leakiest season's we had.

So despite the [misguided - IMO] view that he's a bit of a lame duck, he's actually been a very astute purchase (Bosman) and nothing but a complete professional and faithful servant to the club.

Whilst Chimbonda has his faults, he's better in pretty much every department to Salty. The only aspect of Salty's game that's better than Chimbonda's is that he knows he's a defender first and foremost and doesn't get caught out of position several times.
Which is surely the most important feature of being a defender - especially a full back. Positioning. That and knowing when to get rid of it and knowing when to try and play a pass. Chimbonda notoriously hangs on to the ball for far too long and has easily made more 'marking' and 'positional' errors that have cost us goals than Stalteri - I'd suggest it was close to double.

Chimbonda is much better in the air, a better tackler, a better passer, better going forward etc.
I don't want that from my full-back though. I want him to be able to stop the opposition putting balls in the box, being able to cut inside with ease and generally being unmarked.

The rest is repeating what I've already covered. He is a cult hero - rightly so. He came up with that critical goal that gave us bragging rights; and is more often than not a 6 to 8 out of 10 player rather than Pascal 3 to 9 out of 10.
