Oliver Skipp maintained that following Covid restrictions should not be proving difficult for footballers amid England's recent disciplinary issues.
Five senior players have all fallen foul of rules in the last month and the Under-21 midfielder — on loan at Norwich from Tottenham — stressed the importance of self-restraint ahead of the European Championship qualifier in Andorra.

That's not what he said.

Like at all.

He says footballers should know what is expected of them and have to be more careful particularly as cases are rising and being role models they have to show restraint. However, he also says that it's hard for everyone at the moment and you shouldn't single footballers out.

I have no idea how the daily mail came to that headline...

They need a new law change on headlines so you can't suggest they said something different to what they said because clearly people can't be trusted to actually read what he said.

Yeah and for me the daily mail are clearly trying to weaponize this to spin their narrative, even if you think the narrative is a good one to take.

Like, if anything Skipp is saying, it is difficult to adhere to social distancing rules, but it's difficult for everyone and footballers have some social responsibility. But even then it's hard to say what his exact intended meaning was without the question as context. Mind, for me it sounds like a sort of template answer/non-answer to a question about the COVID breaches.

Also, the statement appears a little contradictory. It could be that he was trying to say that footballers shouldn't feel above the strife of other people, and this is what he meant by 'I don’t think you should single out footballers'. But, I think either we need to context of the question, or it's a bit of a non-answer.

I think what he was saying was that it's difficult for everybody and although footballers do have some privileges that they have a responsibility to adhere but thinks the scrutiny they're under is harsh. I mean either way it was nothing like as the headline suggests.
