Oscar Jansson has joined Shamrock Rovers on loan until June 30.

The Swedish Under-21 international, who has previous loan experience at Exeter City and Northampton, joins up with our Europa League opponents ahead of the Irish Premier League season that begins on March 2.

He's now 21 and this will be his longest loan yet and probably at the highest level that he has played. He needs it realistically if he is going to make it as a top goalkeeper - having said that goalkeepers mature later than outfield players so he has a a couple of years in which he could move up to playing in the English Championship/Premiership before we can make a real judgement. Best of luck to him

After a less than convincing start at Rovers, Oscar is beginning to show his quality. Conceded three in his first three games that left hoops fans thinking that Harry was getting his own back for the stick he got in Tallaght, including one howler away to Cork that would make massimo taibi look like Peter schmeicel.
Since that though he has been more convincing, typical European style of keeping, favoring a two fisted punch to catching a cross. He still has a lot to learn but he will get a lot of experience at rovers and perhaps even some European experience if the draw is kind to the hoops.
Too early to say if he will make the grade, but you only have to look at the three young keepers in the premier league, De Gea, Hart and Bogdan to think that he really needs to make a significant impact this season to push himself into the limelight.

As I understand it his loan period is until 30 June - will Shamrock Rovers renew his loan if they have the opportunity ?

Contracts in Irish league are usually season long, regardless of whether they're permanent or loan. Given that our season runs from march to October it's though to call. If the option is there to extend we will most likely take it up, not having to pay the wages of a first team squad member does make a significant difference to the bank balance, there is even the belief among opposing fans that we have an unfair advantage as Oscar is the only on loan player in the league.
We only have one other keeper of calibre in our squad who got sent off on his debut recently and hasn't had another look in since.
