If we take a look at the players we have signed since Martin Jol became manager then it really does’nt look too bright –
1 - LIMBERSKY..............12 – LEE .......... 23 – CHIMBONDA.
2 - HALLFREDSSON....... 13 – RASIAK........24 – MIDO.
3 - HAMDAOUI.............. 14 – JENAS....... 25 – ROCHA.
4 - CERNY................... 15 – DAVIDS. .....26 – ALNWICK.
5 – DAWSON................ 16 – MURPHY......27 – BALE.
6 – REID....................... 17 – GHALY........ 28 – BERNICHE.
7 – STALTERI................ 18 – BERBATOV....29 – TAARABT.
8 – LENNON.......... ........19 – EKOTTO........30 – BENT.
9 – HUDDLESTONE.......... 20 – ZOKORA. .....31 – KABOUL.
10 – TAINIO......................21 – DERVITTE..... 32 – ROSE.
11 – ROUTLEDGE.....22 – MALBRANQUE. .......33 – BOATENG.

Since Ramos came in as manager ;

34 – GUNTER.
35 – WOODGATE.
36 – HUTTON.
37 – GILBERTO.
38 – MODRIC.

That’s 38 players since January 2005 ,that’s 7 transfer windows and we are about to embark on a very busy summer window.
Comolli has been here since September 2005 – 5 transfer windows.
The players highlighted are what I would term first team/squad regulars!
Have we really been successful in our transfer dealings and if not, what can we do to improve it?

Do the same exercise with all the top four clubs then compare percentages with Jol and Ramos' peers.

You may be surprised.

I'd say that If you looked at our Squad before Santini/Jol took over and now then YES, we've done a pretty decent job of getting rid of a lot of dead wood and have improved the quality and depth of the first team squad.

for a more acurate responce you have to comprehend what was happining needed at that time situation sooooooo, judging by who made main line up at that time these should be in bold. The list above is more in-comparesent you could say.

1- Really Shocking, why you don't rate signings like Stalteri, Tainio, Davids, Ghaly, Lee, Mido ? May be they didn't enough to make top 4 but it was enough to reach UEFA cup after 7 years and retain that position after one year despite doing well both in Eroupe and EPL season 2007/2008. Not A lot team in EPL coped with that busy season apart from us, most of Everton, West Ham, Middlesbrough, Newcastle, Bolton & Blackburn did badly in EPL when they played in Europe. If not like Bolton & Blackburn, then for sure they weren't good enough when they involved in Europe.

2- Limbersky, Hallfredsson, Hamdaoui, Ekotto, dervitte, Berniche & Taarabt. All of them didn't costs that much considering it was attemp to explore potenial stars and I'm confident all of them were Arnesen or Comolli signing, Not Jol at all. if you considered these signings were bad, I could name worse by Fergusen, Benitez & Mourinho despite they have bigger power at their clubs than Jol. Even Wenger paid a lot of money for Jeffers, Walcott & Reyes/Babtista and they didn't enough yet considering what expected.

3- I like MJ too much but I'm not a great admirer for him. He did some mistakes (like any other managers) . BUT
let alone this season (as there are alot of opinion why he failed) but according to reports, he spent nearly £60m for buying players before last summer, and we get around £40 by selling players which meant we spend £20m in two years to get 5th TWICE ( 4th challenge in 1st year and knocked out by the winners in UEFA cup in last 8 ) ... so, spend £10m for 5th TWICE in each year is Excellent acheivement for a team failed to play in Europe in years.

4- MJ was very good in his time and what we wanted in the past, we shouldn't make criticism now just we have Ramos. We shouldn't compare the situation with Ramos whatever happened. MJ took us where he can and we hope Ramos to finish the job by transform us to one of the best in the world.

OP - You have to acknowledge that a few of the buys were last ditch attemps to fill a gap and even more are youngsters for the future.

We've had a large turnover of players but I don't think that we've lost too much in the way of cash

Out of them, only Rasiak was a bad buy IMO, every manager gets it wrong sometimes, especially with young players, we've done better than a lot of clubs.

Thank God that at least we have a board that are willing to spend even if they get it wrong.
As said above every manager gets it wrong sometimes.
Few were last ditch signing like Rasiak!
In the last three years we have done well:
2 fifth place finish and the Carling Cup.
Now we need to invest for the much craved 4th place!

God damn, you're right. We can sign players like nobody else!
Hooray for Tottenham and our machine gun approach to signings!

I think the point is, as has been mentioned, the squad was a bag of shit and needed overhauling. Man U had a pretty shit hot team back then and so could be more selective. I'm happy that overall we've got pretty good value for money.

Interesting to see how many new faces arrive in the next year! Would be nice to see quality, not quantity (though getting quantity AND quality would be OK for me!)

So basically you are saying that the squad is still a bag of shit because we will need to buy a load of more players this summer!

So you're just going to ignore all the well reasoned responses in reply to your post and pick out one sentence to try to justify what you're saying?

You know he's not meaning that at all. He said we have a better squad so we can be more selective than normal (like Man U as you pointed out with your post stating who they've signed) and will just be buying quality. However if we went out and bought 11 world class players he'd be happy as would a Man U, Chelsea, Arsenal, Liverpool fan.. or would that be describing their squads as shit? No, shit is what sums up your argument.

I may be wrong here but if I understand it correctly, MarkinJapan is actually saying the opposite.

This is the team we played against Arsenal in one of Martin Jols early games ;
Robinson,Pamarot,King,Naybet,Edman,Carrick,Mendes,Brown,Ziegler,Keane,Defoe.
Bench -Fulop, Kanoute,Davies,Gardner and Redknapp!
I don't see our current team as being a great deal stronger and I don't think that team was really all that bad!
Since then we have had 37 signings(can't really count Modric) and I know we are all excited with every single transfer acquisition we make -I am exactly the same - but in all honesty, should we?
After spending all that money I don't think we have moved very far forward in fact we are in precisely the same place - the new manager is unhappy with the quality of the squad and the rumours are that we will be very busy during this summers transfer window!
I think we really need to learn from our past mistakes and that means paying the bucks for quality - quantity gets us nowhere!

Not sure what you are trying to get at mate. At least we show ambition even if all our signings haven't worked out. Besides, it hasn't all been doom and gloom - Carrick, Woody, Lennon, Hutton, Berbs.....

Edit: which players have we actually lost out on? Most of the time we have made a profit or at least broken even
