Palermo sporting director Walter Sabatini has offered encouragement to a host of Simon Kjaer’s suitors by suggesting their hands are tied if a big club matches his release clause of £10.3 million. Manchester United, Arsenal FC, Liverpool FC, Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester City and Chelsea FC have all been linked with the highly rated centreback but face stiff competition from Serie A giants Juventus and Inter Milan.

The 21-year-old is widely regarded as one of the finest young defenders on the continent and has in the past openly admitted his admiration for Liverpool FC. The player suggested he would love to mirror his international partnership with Daniel Agger at Anfield, but Rafa Benitez’s side face strong opposition from Premier league counterparts Manchester United, Chelsea FC, Arsenal FC, Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur.

Arsenal FC manager Arsene Wenger is reportedly in the market for a quality centre-half to slot in alongside Thomas Vermaelen, but Roberto Mancini and Carlo Ancelotti’s Italian connections have inevitably seen Manchester City and Chelsea FC linked with the player. Last summer Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson and Liverpool FC’s Rafa Benitez were the two clubs allegedly vying for the precocious Danish international, but most recently Tottenham Hotspur’s Harry Redknapp was interested in the player.

Sabatini suggested Palermo were unfortunately at the mercy of Europe’s biggest clubs because despite their best efforts to have the clause removed, Manchester United, Chelsea FC, Arsenal FC and the other clubs mentioned need only match the £10.3 million in order to talk to the player. That sum is likely to be of great interest to Liverpool FC because of their well documented financial concerns, but the player will not be shy of forthcoming bids should one of the Premier League’s elite clubs open the bidding.

The Palermo chief told Gazetta dello Sport: “Everyone knows Kjaer's situation well.

"The clause has tied our hands together, we tried to increase it, or get rid of it altogether, but his agent rejected it."

"A sale depends on the player."

"If he accepts a top club offer then he will go."

"Or, if he wants, he can stay with Palermo another season to continue his development."

If Woody has to retire we could do a lot worse than this guy. Palermo missed out on CL by a whisker, so mayby the timing is right to lure him, but we should move now as I suspect his price could well rise during the World Cup.
On the other hand I'm not sure what Arry has in store for Kaboul. If he is set to feature at CB in the future we don't really need new players in that position. At any rate 10 million sounds reasonable for Kjaer. If he was English he'd probably be valued at around 16-20 million.

Kjaer sounds like real class. I love Ledley and Woody but they aren't getting any younger. I wouldn't be surprised if Woody retires, and it's hard to tell how many more years King has in him.

That being the case, Kjaer sounds like he could be a great addition. £10.3m isn't much these days, considering we bought Kaboul, who was much less proven, for £8m a couple years ago.

I guess this all comes down to what Harry thinks he has in Ledley. Will he be around for another 3 years or just until the end of next season? Spurs only reupped his contract for another year, so it shows they're pretty skeptical of his ability to sustain his fitness.

With all the other clubs reported to be after this guy, we would be very lucky to land him. Yes, we have qualified for the Champions League, albeit the qualifying round, but with the financial power of some of the other clubs mentioned, I can't see it.

Would Norwich let Doherty go? ... ;-)

Ginger Pele's already been released by Norwich so we could pick him up on a free.

I think we have a chance of signing Kjaer. We aren't exactly poor, I think we are currently ranked as the 15th richest club in the world, but as you say if one of the Elite clubs moves for him we'll miss out. Would love to see us sign him though - one of my top three targets for the summer.

alot of clubs are after him, gonna be hard for us if we go after him

i guess he will expect to be a first team player as he is at palermo.

he is too young to risk in our back 4 IMO. Rotation of Daws, Bassong and King Ledley of Engerland would suit me fine....the Bass has been a fantastic stand in this season I think he hasnt had enough credit
