My thought was, £25m ish for Barkley, what if we have instead decided to buy Foyth and Diop at £10m each, throwing the rest of the cash into a WF? Could we accommodate both Barkley and another WF in our squad?
That would give us Alli, Eriksen, Son, Lamela, Nkoudou, Barkley and Balde (for example), that's 7 players for potentially 3 starting spots assuming we play 4231. Would moving on from Barkley, and having Diop in CM and Balde (for example) as one of 6 players for the attacking 3.

Walker (50), Fazio (3), Bentaleb (17), Njie (8), Sigurdsson sell on (5), plus potentially Wimmer (15) & Sissoko (20).
Approximately £118

Sanchez (40), Gazzaniga (2), Foyth (10), Aurier (20), Diop (10), Balde (25).
Approximately £107m

Alternatively if we bought Barkley instead of Diop, we be closer to £122m, but perhaps overloaded at AM.

Even though position wise this is probably the least necessary of all targets, everything i've read about this lad really makes me want us to sign him. Seems to be of ideal character and has had the perfect education so far for Poch to work with.

It's really gone a bit quiet on this one though and there seems to be no indication we don't still want Barkley,

A few days back...said it was in doubt as we had other priorities.

Page 13.
He said "others coming". It seemed to me like we had dropped interest because we are very close to other players. Don't know if it's players in other areas or a player of similar ilk.

Yeah no idea if it meant other players in that position, other priorities with the money or whatever. My hunch is the foyth deal suddenly being back on around the same time.

Yeah. It could very well be.

Could make sense. Diop was described as Wanyama type DM, but also able to play CM, but Foyth it would appear is a similar price, but could be seen as Dier lite, able to play CB and DM, and potentially Barkley could be used as CM backup.

Heh, I see Dier as Victor lite in DM, and Toby/Jan ultra-lite at CB. Which would make Diop Dier ultra-lite-lite.

looks to be a decent player but I have no idea why we were ever interested especially after the signing of Sanchez we are loaded at DM/CM

Was this before or after the extent of the injury was confirmed?
It was after. There was and is a lot of talk about the actual extent of Barkley's injury and nothing has been confirmed. The injury supposedly happened last Mon/Tues.

Midweek JJ said in this thread if I recall correctly that this is unlikely to happen due to 'other incomings' and then this weekend it looks like he is going to Lyon. We may have dropped our interest middle of the week when there were developments for another player.

He's a different player to Barkley but may have been the back up in terms of bodies in the midfield.

yes I know and that frees up Dier to move somewhat permanently to CM so that makes sense we've basically already added a CM why do we need another?

Let's do the math: assuming we wouldn't move forward with both Foyth and Diop (both rumoured around £10m), you can take it to mean our budget falls close to Gazza + (Foyth or Diop). I believe around £15m, though can't say for certain. Anyone know what the GK fee might be?

For the first team, we can confirm Sanchez right away. Fee is £42m, but I think it's fair to only consider (if we're budgeting here) to account for the expenditure on this year's books - reported at around £30m if memory serves.

Then we can add Barkley for £20m (If the ITK is to be believed), as he's the next most-likely signing. The injury complicates things: either the move may be held off until Jan or the price may drop, but we can comfortably claim a move was to be made, and therefore the verbal agreement for £20m can be added to the subtotal (Again, pinches of salt as necessary).

This leaves us with the two other widely-agreed upon needs, WF and RB. Most of the RBs we've been after have been poo-poo'ed for various reasons, and Aurier seems to be nearly the last man standing. The number associated with him is again £20m. (A wild pattern appeared!) If initial reports on Martial at ~£25-35m are to be believed, this puts the first team budget right around the £100m mark. Whether -- or, more likely, how -- this number was shaped by Walker's transfer I can't say. Nor can anyone confirm with much certainty if those are the planned-on "Poch 4" or not, if all will be pursued let alone bought, or even if that is a fair reflection of the budget or just some arbitrary number that is left in the burning wreckage of a panic-induced barnstorming buys.

DS was 42m euros right?

The impression I got from reading about him is that he isn't really a DM (more of a box to box midfielder) so he wouldn't compete with Dier and Wanyama but instead Dembélé and Winks. Also, he is 20, so it would be one for the future. Dembélé is 30 now and is often injured so he only got a few years left in him at the top level.

Doesn't matter now though since he is going to Lyon.
