Shame Broomfield has left. Was responsible for much of the summer 2012 window which history on thenwhole will be very kind to:

Mousa Dembele (Fulham, £15m), Emmanuel Adebayor (Manchester City, £5m), Jan Vertonghen (Ajax, £10m), Gylfi Sigurdsson (Hoffenheim, £8m), Hugo Lloris (Lyon, £13m), Clint Dempsey (Fulham, £6m)

Not exactly the hardest bit of scouting to do, 4 of them well established PL performers, one of them the French captain goalie, and the other the Ajax captain who had a year left on his contract and was therefore going for a song. Only two of them have been long term successes (Vertonghen & Lloris), the rest have had one decent season at best.

Seems someone in the club has been squealing to the Standard that the scouting department is in a bit of limbo until Mitchell's successor is appointed. A little worrying.

Tottenham scouts fear club is losing out to rivals in bid to find stars as senior talent-spotters depart

Tottenham are looking to reinforce their European recruitment division following the departure of three senior scouts.

Spurs are currently operating without a dedicated talent spotter in the Spain/Portugal region, the Belgium/Holland region, or Germany, after all three left their posts in recent times.

The position of Paul Mitchell, who resigned as Tottenham’s head of recruitment and analysis last August but continues to serve a 16-month notice period, is thought to have had an influence on the decision of the scouts.

When they appoint a successor — talks are ongoing with a number of candidates, with an appointment expected soon — it is likely that these posts will be filled again.

Heads of recruitment or chief scouts usually have trusted lieutenants who follow them from club to club.

Tottenham say that despite the losses within the recruitment team, they still have other scouts watching matches in all key territories, including those mentioned. Scouts move between countries and Spurs say no area is being neglected.

Yet Standard Sport understands there is concern among the Spurs scouting community that the current situation, along with the departure of the three scouts, is already having a negative effect. They fear that other clubs might have stolen a march on them in identifying players.

At Spurs — as at most top clubs — targets are identified through a combination of data analysis and live scouting. Scouts will identify talented players and watch them frequently, while also conducting background checks.

At the same time, an analysis department will examine many different types of data, looking for trends that might indicate whether a player is worth pursuing. With competition to unearth the next superstar so fierce, it is believed some scouts are worried about whether Tottenham currently have enough manpower in the field.

One source told Standard Sport: “It is like a watch where suddenly some cogs have disappeared but you are still expecting it to run in the same way. There are some essential links missing for the entire scouting process to continue working in a successful way.”

Before Mitchell resigned, he was responsible for assigning scouts to specific matches at home and abroad.

Yet since Mitchell made his decision, some scouts are unclear at the extent of his involvement in the recruitment process. Mitchell, 35, is thought to be keen to move into management, though there has been interest from clubs, notably Nottingham Forest, about a recruitment role.

Around the time Mitchell left in August, Rob Mackenzie, who had been Spurs’ head of player identification, took a similar role at Derby. Mackenzie left Derby soon afterwards when Steve McClaren replaced Nigel Pearson.

Ian Broomfield, who had been Spurs’ senior scout, also left in December. It was Broomfield’s second spell at White Hart Lane following his initial appointment in autumn 2008, when Harry Redknapp was appointed manager.

Meanwhile, Tom Carroll is likely to complete a move to Swansea in a deal that could be worth £8million.

Are these the same talent spotters who identified Janssen?

Except for Janssen and Son who else have we signed from these countries?

Doesn't seem like much was happening there anyway but as someone who was never convinced by Mitchell I can't say I'm worried.

I hear Carroll manages the lactic acid content in his body like an absolute pro, easily worth £8m for that alone.

I should imagine the scouts work has been made harder by the success of the team. Signing players that make the team better must be a real challenge now. No doubt the scouts all want their picks signed and with less signings happening I'm sure there will be some discontent.

I was just going to ask what happened to Tom Carroll? Started to make in roads last season and got a new contract but has fallen behind Harry Winks it seems.

Our scouting network needs some serious investment to widen the net and increase the number of players we watch. Our ability to recruit attacking players has been horrific in recent years.

What on earth happened with N'Jie, God only knows and now Janssen looks like another failure.

We're so lucky that Kane came through and became so good. We'd be screwed if he hadn't.

Because a few haven't worked out? Show me a club that has a 100% success rate recruiting players.

Lamela, Dele, Eriksen and Son have all been signed in the last 3 and a half years, so hardly horrific.

N'Jie has been upgraded with GKN, and he's already looked more promising in his fleeting cameos.

I think we should have a stronger scouting network for sure, to me it's some of the wisest money any club can spend.

But largely we're trying to turn water into wine, we don't have the money to spend on wages that the top clubs do to stockpiling "sure thing" talents. We know that that there is always a chance that some of these guys will fail. That's why the academy investment is so important too.

Thought this might fit in here. This is what the Famous Monchi has to say about Sevilla's model and their belief in Ligue 1. Interesting little snippet on their network of scouts and how pragmatic Monchi is.

Now that's the kind of control I can't ever imagine him having at THFC. It sounds an ideal way of doing things but they'd be interference from all people in that if it was at Spurs.

Where did you get that excerpt from though, looks like it and the rest of it is worth reading?

Mate, I know, but we haven't signed a decent goalscoring player since Adebayor in 2011. It's not about having a 100% success rate.

None of those players are strikers and we've needed a striker since Soldado stunk out the place, and even beforehand.

What have we done about it?
