he more than anyone needs the right team structure around him to allow him to make those runs into the box and add something in the final third which is where his strength is - I am so much less concerned about him coming good than I am with Lamela who simply looks like a little boy lost

Certainly agree about Paulinho. The difficulty is we're stacked out with players that are arguably best suited to the number 10 role and wide forwards whose natural game is to cut in. All that means is that the area around the box can become congested and there is less opportunity for a box to box midfielder arriving late to make a difference. It's doable - Lampard has made a career from it in a Chelsea team which has played a number of formations (4-3-3, 4-5-1, 4-1-4-1 to name just three) but it needs the right players around him to make it work.

The system is making our midfielders look like a bunch of incompetent clowns. If AVB doesn't change it then nothing will change, we'll continue to complain about each and every one of them game after game.

Watch Paulinho for brazil and you'll see what sort of football suits him. Driving from the back and going to add another option upfront. Finding gaps in the defence. All of this though is useful from deep and with our half field tactics he can't do that. He instead looks like a donkey.

I think a lot of us, myself included were responsible for over-hyping a lot of the players we signed during the summer transfer window. They seem to be rather more average than a lot of us were led to believe.

Also, if 20-30m pound players honestly have only one system they can play in and are unable to adapt to anything else then they shouldn't be costing 20-30m in the first place.

I certainly haven't seem much from any of Paulhinho, Soldado or Lamela that justify's them being our three record signings.

Paulinho was bought to pitch in with some goals from midfield like Lampard. He's got 2 already, Dembele doesn't pitch in with goals.

he's only got 1. i think for paulinho to be a success and earn a place in the side he's going to need to be regularly hitting 12-15 goals, otherwise he's just not worth playing as his general play is very mediocre in all departments.

If I'm being brutally honest, Paulinho reminds me a lot of Jenas. My mate told me this and I laughed it off, but the more I watch, the more I see.

Really hoping he can be freed up a bit to play like he does for Brazil....but it's looking unlikely at the moment.

The Brazilian Jenas. At least JJ was homegrown.

I'm not even joking. That's all he's shown me, and when I saw him in the Confederations Cup I had the same worries. He's about as average as they come.

Paulinho has been described as a box-to-box midfielder, with powerful running and good movement into the box. He possess the ability to push his side forward from midfield to supplement his strong defensive work. Paulinho also offers a useful presence in set piece situations at both ends of the pitch.

Paulinho = Gus Poyet

Good enough player but spunking nearly 20 bar on him could be a bit messy.

powerful running and good movement into the box - yes
ability to push his side forward from midfield - maybe
supplement his strong defensive work - nope
useful presence in set piece situations - yes

So basically someone who has no place in a midfield two which is where he's played all season(except for yesterday where I've no idea what the plan was)

He might be playing too deep for us. I know he plays there for Brasil, but for us he takes too many touches and holds on to it for too long. So it contributes to our slow play, lack of space to exploit & packed penalty boxes.

We need whoever plays infront of the back 4 to recycle the ball quicker. Sandro does this. & Capoue/Holtby.

Paulinho looks like his primary strength is attacking the box. & if we set up with wingers making crosses he could be effective making late runs into the box once he finds his shooting boots. Like the fat chelsea player.
