Not just a Spurs legend either. Adulated in the Derby area.
Went into a village pub near Burton where Mr's JimmyG2 comes from when he was manager at Derby in the 70's and they were having a Dave Mackay tribute night. The Burton ale certainly flowed.
He managed Nottingham Forest too. Thats like Arsenal and Spurs but more so.
He hated the Billy Bremner picture, he would have preferred to show his more creative side which he certainly had.
Played good cop bad cop with Blanchflower to an extent.
We have used him as a template for our midfield and measure even players today against it.
Still looking for his replacement.
Happy Days.
The picture of him being manhandled into an ambulance with a broken leg speaks volumes. Not even on a stretcher. Must have been in a load of pain but ain't gonna show it. God only knows what he made of the antics of today's players.
Interesting interview with guy who wrote his book on TS today.
Apparently Mackay hated that photo with his fist raised. They wanted to use it for the cover but he said it made him look thuggish and he didn't want to be lobed in with the likes of Chopper etc as there was so much more to his game than that.
He only did it because he'd just come back from injury with broken leg and that fker spent the whole game trying to break it again. They made up afterwards and became friends. True gentleman according to all who knew him.
Wonder what he thought of Chelseas style since Abramovich lol.
Shame he didn't get to see us lift the cup on Sunday.
Gonna have to buy that book. Interesting stuff.
RIP
