It's been our best ever first half to a Premier League season with 45 points from the first 19 games. Our previous best was the 42 points in Redknapp's final season, with the average of the Pochettino era before this season being 34.75 points. We are 16 points ahead of our Premier League average before this season (29.15). 45 points at the half way stage is also more than we got in the ENTIRE 1997-98 season, and the same as the entire 03-04 and 93-94 seasons, the latter of which was a 42 game season instead of only 38. I remember watching us lose at home to Charlton in December 2003, leaving us in the relegation zone on 18 points and praying that this young promising kid called Johnnie Jackson coming from our academy would be able to step up enough to keep us in the Premier League.
Now here we are in the top 2 in the league and still in every cup competition, having knocked out Arsenal at the Emirates and getting through the Champions League group of death despite not bothering to turn up for the first half of the group stage. Not bad for a team with no stadium that was supposedly set to drop out of the top 6 because of the lack of investment.
The good thing about the season is, there have been a lot of stand out players. Regardless of what Graeme Souness thinks, the good thing about the way the current team seems to be set up is that we are no longer reliant upon one man to perform and get results - I have my personal preference but I genuinely can't call who I think will win this poll amongst the rest of our fan base hence why I have set it up. Will be interesting to see the results.
