We’ll get top 4 but is it that vital? Eriksen is a perfect example of CL or not we can’t stop players joining Madrid or Barca. We don’t spend the amounts required to buy the sorts of players who will only join if we’re in CL - and even that’s a myth, it’s all about contract size. Kane and Dele wouldn’t suddenly go oh no CL right I’m off, they’ll leave when they choose to leave if they choose at all.

We don’t need CL to spend as we only spend what we earn from sales anyhow. I used to think it’s part of the process and our path but now I just think we’ve hit brick wall and CL isn’t the issue. Our revenue increase without CL is going to be vast, but I suppose a positive is it could be used as an excuse as to why we haven’t bought anyone this coming summer.
Yes and no. There is a cache about being in the CL, especially if that’s a routine achievement. If we sell Eriksen and fail to land CL, I’d be shocked if Poch stayed.

Then there is the long term planning involving the prospect of Enic selling the club. The stadium is obviously a selling point, but so is CL

Absolutely have to get Isco in return if he does go. Start chatting him and his agent up early just in case it comes to it.

Pay whatever his agent wants to make sure he comes here. Isco's more of a David Silva type player than an Eriksen, but it would really soften the blow.

JJ pretty much shot this down yesterday by replying "ha ha" to a post from Hotspur Related about Isco. Frustrating because he's exactly the kind of player we would need in place of Eriksen.

I can't begrudge Eriksen wanting to further his career and for wanting to play for one of the biggest clubs in the world, he deserves it. My biggest concern is how we would replace him with all this talk of not being able to sign the specific players that Poch wants.

I would love Isco, but if we are not big enough for Eriksen hen we certainly won’t be big enough for Isco. Not unless Levy pays him handsomely... which, well, lol.

So he has rejected contracts and the noise is being made by his party ... Not sure what Spurs can do tbh.

Fantastic player, poor 'form' though, unimpressed.

Don’t know it it’s that we aren’t big enough. Players of Eriksens age probably always wanted to go to the Barcelona’s or Madrid’s. They are the worlds best.

Isco though has done that and won it all. After that, the Premier League is a massive draw imo.
But yeah, we would need to pay still.

Some articles now saying Levy is looking into viability of just keeping him until end of contract and letting him go for a free... Interesting...

Don’t believe that for a second. We wouldn’t even do that with Dembele, so why would we consider it for a player probably worth 10x as much?

Different situations entirely though.

Dembele is knackered in English league and arguably would struggle to get into team now with current fitness issues.

Eriksen is a key member of the team and in his prime - if we kept him until end of contract would give us far more chance of success during that period.

All theory and all could be BS but right now I think it's fair to say this whole thing is playing out a little bit in the media. Eriksen wants a move to Madrid and wants this summer if at all. Levy wants him to sign a new contract and/or stay or go for mega money. So Eriksen puts out there his desire and Levy puts out there "or you can just stay".

He’s on the decline yes, but as I’ve said in the Dembele thread, used sparingly I think he would have still been a great asset throughout the remainder of this season.

I really don't think what he is doing is all that bad. He's 27 in February, this is probably his last chance at a move. He is keeping his head down and performing amazingly. The only reason anyone here knows the media talk is from Eriksen's camp is because an individual privy to the information posted it on here. Most times a player wants a move, they kick up a fuss (refusing to train, publicly make statements about the move, themselves). Look at Coutinho, for instance, who missed the opening to their previous season because he was trying to push for a move to Barcelona.

Does seem anti-Levy but keeping firm (but fair) with Eriksen and RM over the next 6 months may just lead to us keeping him, if true he is happy to stay if it doesn't pan out with RM. If not, at least secure the best deal if he goes. Needs to be a level of calling the bluff on the possibility of him walking for nothing in 2020.

But yeah, we would need to pay still.

When we signed Eriksen for the paltry sum of £10m, there was always a mixture of "What? How have we pulled this off" vs. "Is there something about him that has meant the big clubs didn't go for him?"

He's really grown at Spurs into one of the world's best midfielders and unfortunately for us, with our financial restrictions we may not have peaked when he has. He's at the stage of his career where "the big move" is now ripe for him to take and the contract scenario has fallen in his favour. The fact he has not signed a new contract is ominous and certainly unless we show some significant level of ambition in the short term (investing to win the league or even progressing far into the CL), we won't be able to convince him to stay.

And I don't think we will be able to match his ambition now. Perhaps in a year, or two but not right now. And it's likely the Big Boys (Madrid, Barcelona or even the likes of Juve or PSG) will come calling. But that's ok. What we need is to plan for that eventuality and identify a top, top quality replacement. It may turn out to be a good thing.

On Isco - I was never convinced he actually wanted to come to Spurs. Has there been any sign of that at all? Forget the ££, does he want to come to the Premier League or to Spurs?
