I think in a world of heavily sanitised sports stars its refreshing that he says what he thinks even if we don't like it i.e. the interview. He is a brave lad coming out and saying this and I wish him all the best and hope he is still our player next season.

Totally agree, in a sporting environment strength and image is everything to doing well. It must be really hard for a player to come out and say they are feeling really depressed about life for fear of being transferred or dropped. I remember he actually said during his Scum interview that getting away from the club whilst he was injured helped him to get better. Other Itk's have hinted that he was a little bipolar on this forum before but it was never really acknowledged at the time.

Good luck to him managing this ilness and let's hope we can cheer him up with a great world cup display.

I hope he stays and can get back to being our first choice left back again.

Depression can make you do things on spur of the moment so can see now why he may have done that infamous interview last summer.

I'm hoping he still wants to stay with us.

Rubbish.

Sadness and grief are very clearly different entities from clinical depression. Doctors do not dish out antidepressants (or sleeping tablets willy nilly).

People who show signs of clinical depression are not just given pills. In fact careful assessment is made, tablets take at least 2 weeks before they even start working so it is far better to initiate treatment than do nothing. And treatment is often in the form of counselling first. Most patients are followed up very closely.

Depression can be note debilitating than a lot of serious physical illness.

On Rose:
I have a lot of respect for Danny Rose coming to the table and talking about his issues. Mental health illness affects up to 1/3 people in some way at some time and it’s important we can be open - the more this is “normalised” in sport, the easier it will be for other players to get help and support.

I know you’re a doctor but I’m
Sure you’d agree, like in most professions, there’s rarely a universal, consistent consensus in how each dr will treat any given situation.

From my own personal experience, and I’m not just talking depression here, but we live in a drug culture, especially towards young people/children. It’s not even just prescribed medication the whole culture in the western world is to take drugs as medication whether that be for depression, ADHD or whatever.

I was paraphrasing in my initial post as clearly I have no idea what these people have said to their GP but, nonetheless, they got signed off work pretty damn quick and are all on medication.

Like I say, this isn’t just drs. It’s a deep rooted problem in our culture imo where you can walk into any shop you want and buy a variety of drugs (all of which do harm) to treat a variety of symptoms and I think, especially towards mental health, and other behavioural problems, drugs are far to readily available.

Naturally I’ll bow to your deeper understanding on all things health related but I’ll call it how I see it.

His life obviously, but why on earth would you open up about something like that to a room full of hacks without even telling your parents/family first?

because sometimes it's harder to tell the ones you love, that your ill.

like you I have suffered it all my life, and it won't ever go away not for me it won't. the tablets they give me clash with other tablets I have to take.

It was discussed on SC at the time of that interview in August that he might be depressed. Some posters said he didn’t sound 100% so a good spot by them. Sounds like he’s been on drugs to help so it’s obviously something the club were aware of and probably why he wasn’t hung out to dry by the manager or his team mates.

I was worried the way he looked at the closing ceremony of the old WHL, he really didn't look like he wanted to be there, and when the report came out about wanting more wages, the google and everything else, I thought back to that day and thought he wanted out of Spurs, never even thought of depression which is something that can be brought on by numerous things.

I'm very sorry to hear that you struggled with those issues. I've also dealt with depression and anxiety for most of my life. It's not fun in the slightest and can be crippling. Seeing my teenage son exhibit some of the same issues is hugely worrying, as it would be for any parent. So, we talk about these things a lot in my home and with counselors too. I hope that Danny is surrounded by those that give him confidence and fill his heart with love and hope.
@punkisback is there a reason you WTF’d this post? If choosing to do so, at least explain. As on the surface that seems like a rather cynical and crappy thing to do.

Re: DR criticizing the club. He is speaking his truth. While ambiguous to me, to the extent that reading behind the lines it does seem DR feels he was not treated well by the club, I personally react to that openly rather than defensively. I hope that the club has learned from this experience as well and that to the extent there are any holes in the club/trainers' treatment of and sensitivity to mental health issues, the club is committed to patching them up going forward.

Best left back I've seen in my life time at spurs. I wish he'd had a better relationship with the fan base over the years, "that interview" aside(where he didn't actually say anything which wasn't true) I think he does deserve more respect than he gets. Not to mention the fact we, as a collective, treated him like utter shit when he signed that new contract. Pot. Kettle. Black.

When he's firing he scraps for spurs more than anyone on the pitch. And that matters. A real nasty piece of work player who happens to be quite brilliant at football. Hope he stays and wins everyone around again. And he deserves a huge amount of respect for being so open about his mental health problems.

He's been my adopted player before. He's defo going to be my adopted player for 2018/19 if he stays. You fuckers leave our Danny alone!

Some fans turned against him when he was coming back from sunderland and tweeted "oh great get to go back to sitting on the bench at tottenham" or some such.

Some of our fans love to hate some of our players unfortunately.

Only have to look at the comments in the other thread to see some people's attitudes to it. Some people will never forgive him.

One of the saddest things is how easily doctors dish out meds for anyone who expresses even the vaguest symptoms of depression. Know loads of people who have gone to a GP saying I’m sad and want to sleep all the time and they walk out of the surgery pills in hand and signed off work which means any problems the person may have isn’t really getting sorted. I’m sure Danny has all the support he needs from the club, though. Not the same for Joe Blogs however.

Rubbish.

Depends where you work as a clinician, and which MH practitioner you see as a client. Also, not true that all meds take at least 2 weeks to have any effect; so many variables here, not least the patient's own physiology and the particular body's tolerance and interaction with whatever drug is prescribed.

Also, there is a huge variance and unpredictability among prescribers. Depends who you see as a client. Some docs do prescribe tablets "willy nilly".

Initial and progressive assessments are only snapshots. Anyone that's had experience of conducting MH diagnoses knows this. I've worked in settings that required at least three diagnostic assessments from different practitioners, and then required group consultation to agree on a med and therapeutic treatment plan. And still huge differences of opinion occurred.

The term "clinical depression" is a huge, messy umbrella, which means you could have two clients with the same diagnosis across all the DSM axes and profiles, and yet are completely different cases. They'll require completely different approaches in terms of both medication and counseling interventions.

Often, a client's MH diagnosis won't align with the meds profile that may help them. So, a DSM diagnosis will be changed to legally enable a prescriber to provide meds which help improve the functionality of a patient's life, which is the end goal. In short, this shit is messy! And I hope Danny Rose receives the best targeted treatment to suit his particular needs.

I will admit, I definitely thought Rose was a dick for the comments he made and especially the timing of them. This revelation has changed my view but as we weren't provided with this context at the time I don't feel anyone should feel bad for anything they said. You can only judge a person by their words and actions at the time.

last night he was fully of hand signals and pointing. thought it showed a good element of leadership and coordination.
there were a number of times where he looked up and saw nobody in the middle and opted to play it square. I guess it's good decision making but it annoyed me that he couldn't show what he can do.

Danny Rose has a fair bit to say just recently.

After the season he’s just had, I could be guilty of thinking he may just concentrate on his football. Especially seeing as he’s robbed a place on the plane.

Sort of begs the question wether he’d be this outspoken if Utd or City were interested?!
I mean this in complete seriousness, you’re a ****.
Lay off the man, he’s had a lot of problems recently. Look past Danny Rose the footballer and have some fucking sympathy for Danny Rose the human.

Danny Rose no longer prime target for Manchester United as Jose Mourinho turns focus away from Spurs

Danny Rose is facing disappointment over his dream move to Manchester United after Jose Mourinho shelved plans to sign another full-back.

Tottenham Hotspur defender Rose had been hoping to clinch a £50 million switch to Old Trafford after the World Cup, which kicks off on Thursday.

Rose travelled out to Russia with the rest of the England squad on Tuesday, but will return to find out he may have to stay at Spurs.

It is understood United manager Mourinho has suspended a move for Rose after adding full-back Diogo Dalot to his list of options at left-back, behind Ashley Young and Luke Shaw.

The Portuguese has told vice chairman Ed Woodward not to pursue Rose at the moment and to focus his attention elsewhere, with a central defender a greater priority.

Interest in Rose could be revisited if Shaw leaves or if United fail in moves for other players, but the 27-year-old, who last season battled with depression, may have to get used to the idea of starting next season with Tottenham.

Everton have shown an interest in Rose, but it would be a surprise if the Goodison Park club matched Tottenham’s £55m valuation of the player. There have also been reports of Juventus and Borussia Dortmund looking at the player.

Keeping Rose for another season would solve a potential problem for Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino, following Fulham’s promotion to the Premier League.

Tottenham had been confident of replacing Rose with Fulham’s Ryan Sessegnon if the Cottagers remained in the Championship, but the 18-year-old is now expected to stay put for another year.

Rose and Pochettino patched up their differences after the former Leeds United youngster expressed a desire to leave Tottenham last summer. He has a contract that runs to 2021.

Southgate is expected to start with Rose, ahead of Young, in England’s first World Cup game against Tunisia next week and a good tournament could spark interest from elsewhere.
