I think it was rather telling that Sanchez was given a new contract first. Center back that only just arrived and was on a long term contract didnt need to be re-signed so soon. And by that I mean within a couple of days of our last PL match. To me, it smacks of "in yer face Toby".. Being the first senior player to be tied down to a new contract is probably an indicator that theres absolutely no chance of Toby staying. I wish I was wrong but this definitely feels like theres undertones and sub-information being relayed to the public regarding Toby with this statement of intent regarding Sanchez.

Personally, I am sooo sooo happy we have Sanchez as he's a magnificent player at his age who will undoubtedly get better. And if there's anything to take from this its that losing Toby to Sanchez long term is the best thing that could have happened!

I don't think they expected him to be so heavly involved in the first team this season, and due to that has been given a new contract upon showing what he can do and an adequate wage to go with it. He might have been on alot less untill he so showed what he could do, saves our wages and pushes the player to perform to get a higher wage if he performance like he has done.

It said a lot to me that with Toby struggling on Saturday we brought Sanchez on to close the game out. Felt like the king is dead, long live the king.

It’s pretty standard practice for the club. For all that’s said about DL, he’s not shy in handing out a new contract to players that have been performing and fall in line with out financial model.

Every summer there’s a flurry of contract renewals for key players, to protect the club from players running their contracts down and to reward those who have performed well.

That's not quite the truth though, is it?
kind of is i thought in some way. Sanchez had already created a great partnership with vertonghen and is seen as long term at 21. Toby probably could have been in the team sooner i assume though if the contract stuff was not being talked about but also Sanchez played some very good football and remember played through a lot of the champions league games as well, Toby has no right to just get back in the team if Sanchez is playing so well. He's a quality player at such a young age.

Really crazy when you think about where he is at this age and what he could be at his prime.

It's so easy to forget just how young he is. He probably had 2 bad games last season, at most. I think we've already put at least £20m on his potential transfer fee.

Most definitely, but I don't even want to think about a transfer fee. Hopefully we got him young enough where he'll fall in love with Spurs and be with us for a long long time. Love your name by the way.

I love the guy, tbh. He reminds me of the kid in the class who doesn't talk much, doesn't show off and doesn't demand attention but asks questions, listens and learns. No ego, just wants to be as good a defender as he can be.

FYI. Fox Sports is running a series called PHENOMS. Just watched one on Columbia and featured Sanchez. Not a YouTube highlight video, but cameras followed him behind the scenes from Columbia to Ajax to Spurs. Included discussion with what must be his agent as they talk about a possible transfer from Ajax. Not great, but you get a glimpse of who D Sanchez is, as a person.

Phenoms / S1 E17 Colombia / 6-17-2018 • TV-PG • 22m
Follows the journeys of Davinson Sánchez and Rafael Santos Borré from their small hometown success in Colombia to their battles on the field.

Having a pretty poor game against Japan so far. Got roasted twice in a matter of seconds which lead to his side conceding a penalty and a red card inside 3 minutes. In fairness to him he's not gone hiding and still putting himself about, but he looks second best to almost every ball. I think we sometimes underestimate just how well organised we (Spurs) are as a defensive unit and the impact playing alongside Verts has on Davinson.

Fingers crossed he manages to redeem himself today or I fear he'll be in for a lot of criticism - although it's easy to forget that he's only just turned 22 and I have no doubt he has what it takes to improve year on year and become a superstar at the back for both club and country.
