I know I'm in the minority but don't think Dier offers that much in midfield. He's a good squad player but I doubt he will accept being backup. If he wanted to go, I'd have no problem with selling him for what would no doubt be a hefty fee.

I don't think selling Dele's bestie in the squad (to likely a top 6 competitor) would be a great idea.

wait, he's been out a couple of months because of his appendix so now he sucks? its a short trip to the doghouse around here.

Don't be so dramatic. The discussion is about his potential limitations and where his place is in the lineup/squad. I'm guessing everyone here is happy with him staying, if he is indeed happy to stay.

Eric Dier is most definitely better than Phil Jones... Dier played 2 sweet assists last season (vs Chelsea and Everton), he's a more creative passer than Winks is at this point.

Is he really? He’s rash in his challenges and slows our attacks down. He’s a centre back and not a DM as much as he sees himself as one. Winks on the other hand pings the ball here, there any everywhere and does so at a nice tempo. Dier’s a decent squad player but that’s about it. I’d happily keep him as he offers us options but he doesn’t offer the creativity and energy Winks does and certainly not the physical strength, energy and pace Sissoko does. Dier has the turning circle of a tractor and isn’t suited to a quicker tempo, high press game that we like to play and excel at.

To be fair, there's a pretty sizable difference between Dier and Wimmer. Dier has captained the side, is an England international, etc.

This was for the point that you can't sell one players best friend.

I think Rice still has a lot to prove. He hasn’t played at the highest level as in Europe and internationally. Also invariably when West Ham do play a top team they get spanked. It’s also a very different skill set needed playing as a DM in a mid table team as opposed to a top 6 team. 75% of his game now is about defending. If he plays for a top 6 can he be creative and useful against a low block is he technically good enough. It’s all well good making a multitude of last ditch tackles as he has to for West Ham. Completely different dictating the tempo of a game as Winks is doing.

Dier looked equally good when he first started playing the midfield role for us it can be argued.

The issue I think we might see with Rice is when he grows in to his frame. He’s a bit of a unit already. Just turned 20.

Dier will probably have a chat with Poch at the end of the season to discuss long terms plans for midfield. If the manager tells him that he plans additional reinforcements that might be ahead of him in the pecking order, then Dier needs to decide if he wants to keep playing that position or commit to CB. I truly hope he picks the latter... as I feel he could make an incredible CB one day.

This! I love Dier's warrior mentality and i really want to keep him in the squad, but not as a first choice dm. I have no problem with him being a utility player we can use in different areas if needed but he should mainly be played as a center back. He's got everything a good center back needs and the thing he's lacking he can still work on (which is mainly to stay focused throughout the whole game)

I dont see dier being happy as a backup or utility player tbh. Unfortunately though thats the best we can offer if we truly want to win a pl.
Imo he is not as good as toby, jan, sanchez, foyth and maybe even davies at cb IMO.
His place at a club challenging for top honours is teetering on the edge imo and its in his hand to try to kick on.

Only on this place can you have people complain so much about needing more depth in centre midfield. Then after selling Dembele, the constant injuries to Wanyama, and still getting no centre midfield signings talk about selling Dier.

An important aspect to the to me futile idea of selling Dier, is who would we get instead? It seems to me that some posters take for granted that some new Modric/Dembele-star material player would be signed instead. Look at the recent transfer history and tell me when did the club last sign a player who were with much likelihood destined for an immediate spot in starting line up? Or when was there indeed signed a player specifically as an upgrade on somebody else? We would probably have to go back to Alderweireld as a sole beacon of some form of immediate starting line up intent. Selling Dier is just about the worst thing we could do to an already suffering midfield section of the squad.

He is 25 now so can't be considered young and still to be developed.

More potential as a centre back but imo he only looks good in a 3. How long do you give him to develop into a specialised position? My view is that Sanchez is ahead of him defensively and Foyth is ahead of him technically. Not to say he cant fit into the back but he needs to start playing there more often.

He can still be developed, look at Sissoko, you don't stop improving when you turn a certain age.

If he had only played midfield all his career then i'd agree. But if Toby is going, it makes very little sense to let Dier go too. I think he has a role to play as his natural replacement.
