Really? From what I have read I don't see hardly anyone suggesting Vic or Winks should have started in front of him yesterday and I can only assume if they have a preference for one of them, it can only be fitness based.
it's a point made by many of our fans, they are scant in their praise of Dier and constantly reference how we would be better with one of the three I listed....this is done without recognition that while Dier may lack some things that the others bring he is consistently ready to play, week in and week out. Durability is a crucial dimension when analyzing players and many of our fans gloss over this component.
For what it's worth, I like all 4 of our main CM but I do feel that too many take Dier's incredible qualities and actual contributions since that first game against Spam for granted. Think Poch and Maureen have it right....he is a top player.

the red cross is for your second point- the first I agree with.

They created 4 chances, plus 1 other moment of danger, in 95 mins. In our usual 2, Dembele often finds himself in 121 combat and commits fouls like the one on Hughes. But we still had the whole team back to deal with the free kick. They won the winning corner from a cross from the left.

Dembele provided a platform for plenty of possession for our creative players who bottled it/passed every ball to Trips. Them not turning up and the two defensive errors were the reasons for the defeat. Anyone who focuses solely on Dembele's impact is scapegoating, and ignorant of the wider dynamics of the game involving two dozen players.

Whilst I agree with much of your points. We lost momentum in the game which allowed their confidence. No momentum no goals. The momentum changed everything.

Being relatively injury free is a good attribute, but it shouldn't be in any way a deciding factor of who should play if others are match fit. I mean Sissokko is pretty much a machine, but that doesn't alter the fact others are better.

Completely agree. Dier is a useful player to have around as he is rarely injured, and in hindsight it would have been better dropping Eriksen or Alli for Dier seeing now how the game panned out but before the game I think I for one felt justified in my criticism of Dier post United, I felt Poch also saw what I saw which he was horribly off the pace and a passenger in there. I don't think it's a coincidence he was benched after such a poor performance. I don't expect a CM can genuinely play as badly as Dier did at OT and expect to be picked again the following week.

Now Eriksen and Alli were woeful at Watford but Poch will pick them because their ability to hurt teams is always there and can come out at any moment.

I think our weak CM will cost us this season. Some of us said it was weak in the summer and so far my fears at playing out. Dembele has looked largely like this is finally a season too far. Dier hasn't been in form for a while. Winks and Wanyama injured. We badly need Wanyama of two years ago and I sincerely hope Winks gets his form and fitness and shows us all the player some hope he can be.

Unfortunately Eriksen is showing us he is still too much of a pansy and powder puff to play deeper in CM. Bottling challenges left right and centre is disgraceful really.

All in all and this isn't just based on Watford, our CM is a bit of a mess. Let's hope two players step up to the plate, whether that is Dier and another I don't care.

Yep. Going forward with the players we currently have at our disposal, a fully fit Winks and Wanyama would be the two names I would want to see starting in midfield whatever formation we go with.

A lot of people were putting Eriksen deeper in their dream Spurs team but to be fair to him it's just not his role.

He is better playing further up where he can influence things better and he should have a couple of players around him to do the tackling for him (yes not right him bottling challenges but it's not really his game).

Plus he might mess up his beautiful hair. :joyful:

For me dier has the ability to become a much better player than what we are seeing . He needs to have a specialist position and really improve his game I feel like he has just coasted along the last couple of years

Yep I was saying this to dad yesterday that I'm looking forward to seeing Winks and Wanyama 100% fit as would like to see them paired in either a 4-2-3-1 or 3-4-2-1.

Wanyama at his peak is a truly outstanding defensive midfielder. I'm fond of Dier but Wanyama is better (if he can recover from injuries).

Wanyama also played a very important role when we played 3-4-2-1 at end of season before last and were tonking teams.

"Some of you guys just don't understand the incomprehensible idiosyncrasies of Eric Diers game, he fills space really well and is Poch's general". Both those things are possibly true. They don't however negate the fact he has possibly the worst awareness of any player in the league, gets ran through like he's not there and hasn't got the bollocks to pick a pass, he'd rather play back to Verts or Toby and let them have a go. These deficiencies used to be negated by him throwing himself about and being a force in midfield, now he can't even bring himself to make a challenge.

Well.....that was probably his worst ever performance in our colours

Didn’t do nothing at all didn’t even try to do anything was spun around like a dizzy dinosaur first time I have actually seen him play like a centre back who has been stuck in midfield.

He was just as bad at Old Trafford, but we won so people didn’t want to see it.

He wasn’t great against Newcastle either, but again we won and Newcastle just are obviously miles behind a side like Liverpool.

If you are an opposition manager it’s so easy to coach your players on what to do against him. Just close him down anytime he’s either side on or facing his own goal and most of the time you are going to draw a mistake.

Can't be trusted with the ball at his feet in midfield. Constantly ball watching, lost possession far too often. Hope Wanyama can re-discover his form.

Can someone please tell me why we decided to loan out Onomah, look at our midfield. Little quality and no depth

As I said, the guy is abysmal. It's ok though because he's tactically spot on and Poch's man on the field apparently.

Is he fuck? His passing is awful. Slow, ponderous. Worst player on the pitch v United away and he wasn't any better today.

Drop him now Poch

Slow, lazy, negative, pondering, pointing, strolling, walking sums up Dier these days.

Said by someone who thought he was a revelation when he first went into midfield. Would also love to know his weight then and now.

Sorry but this guy is an absolutely terrible midfielder. He has no ability to play under pressure both in a sense of turning and accelerating away from pursuing players or ability to pick a good pass when under pressure. He doesn’t even put the other team under pressure anymore like he used to so we may as well just play Winks deep and then we will at least have someone who has energy and the quality to play out

Because Onomah only looks good against his own age group. Clearly not good enough to play for us at the moment.

He hardly set the championship alight last season., Have a watch of some of the youtubes.

I genuinely don’t think he’s any worse than Sissoko and not Dier on his current form
But my main point is that we lack depth in midfield and Wanyama, Dembele and Winks are all injury prone and you can’t trust them
