Have to say battle of the bridge( even though we effectively lost the title) of which he was a key part. And the other night are two footballing nights that will forever live in my memory. And a big part of that is down to Eric Dier. This is exactly what we need need from him. He needs to impose himself on games and own the middle of the park. To the point where other players are fearful of what’s coming. I want him to be the chopper Harris of the modern day. Honestly if he can build a reputation like that I don’t care if he gets sent off a couple of times a season. To have an absolute mad bastard infront of our defence would be invaluable.

This is awesome. If there's one thing you can say about Dier, he's an intelligent kid and a natural leader. He says all the right things in these situations. He got booked because the ref was an incompetent fool that made mistakes all night.

Make no mistake, that challenge was huge. It was clean, strong and fair. Ramos knew it, Spain knew it and it made it clear from the off that we weren't gonna be fuckin about.

Overall I thought Dier looked quicker and sharper than he has so far this season. He was flying to the ball when he pressed and looked more in control than usual. I'm hoping his world cup hangover has passed now and he can re-establish the form that made him so valuable for us in previous seasons. Partnering Winks long term needs to be the goal for both Spurs and England.

Equally, it was interesting to see how well it worked to have a player like Barkley in that midfield 3. Barkley was excellent carrying the ball forward, allowing Dier to sit deep and break up play, Winks to be the middle man keeping possession and moving the ball quickly. Long term we could use a CM playing in a similar way to Barkley did on Monday night. Carrying the ball forward, picking passes. It may not have worked against Liverpool with 3 CM's but I'd love to see Eriksen doing that role, I'm just not sure if he suits it all that well. Maybe a player like N'Dombele is the answer, we'll see.

I think it's all about controlled aggression like dier says. In the chelsea game we lost control and paid for it. Two different things.

Nope.
It was ugly
and in terms of
winning the match and the league
counter productive.

Battle of the bridge was one of the greatest ever PL games. Even considering the final outcome not sure I’d change the tone of that game. In reality I doubt it made much difference and Leicester would likely have won it anyway.

My key memory of International matches
is that we have been mainly outplayed
not out-muscled
through lack of quality.

Not sure I can remember a tackle getting so much attention since Moore in 1970. The ironic thing is it wasn’t even necessary.

that's not irony.

A tackle is being lauded and will go down in England football history, therefore I would have expected it to have a consequence on the game. I find it ironic that the said tackle had absolutely no consequence or significance in the game, as the defender was inside his own box.

a state of affairs or an event that seems deliberately contrary to what one expects and is often wryly amusing as a result.

The fact is was so utterly unnecessary is what made it so brilliant to me, topped off by it being Ramos being shithoused for a change

It just showed a little bit of something people don't see from England often. Aggression, passion blah blah blah.

I hope to see more of it from Dier, in a more sensible way perhaps. For me, hes been coasting since his first season in midfield and a little bit of zip/urgency wouldn't go a miss.

The 'attitude' Poch discussed today will be huge for Spurs, in coming weeks, with the fixtures we have. I'm sure he will be nailing that into them, particularly Dier.

nice that Ramos congratulated him!
And Eric's comments were very respectful and measured.
Coupled with comments from earlier in the season you can see he is thought of as a leader for club and country?
Wonder if we will get any contract news soon?
Am I misremembering or did @Hercules allude to something positive?

which is odd as the tone here has definitely been lining him up as the next scapegoat.

Dier was much much better against Spain, if all the praise he is getting gives him confidence and helps him improve then that can only be good for us.
