I mean, he has changed plenty of games for us during his time here.

Indeed.

I, for one, think he was heading for a real break-out season, last year, when his injury problems started. He was about the only one who showed Poch required levels of fight in the Newcastle debacle in the last game of the season before. He got his head in to get a most un-luxury-player-like equaliser at Goodison late on the first day of the season. Sad to say, but some folk do still just seem to see the player who had a disappointing first season and nothing else. If/when we get him back, our second string will be Son, Llorente, Lamela - I'm excited.

What he is good at:

Pressing / work rate
Tactical fouls
Belief
Finding space between the lines
Taking a vertical space and turning
Weighted passes

What he is not good at (frustratingly);

Decisive play
Surging / direct running with the ball
Finishing

If he could have added a 'killer instinct' in the last third, when he's received the ball in between their lines, he's turned, we're 3 vs 3 ... and he .... well, just dillie-dathers ... throws three or four dummies with his eyes / shoulders and is tackled from behind. I just wish he'd shift it one way and surge past the first defender. Decisive. And then we're in.

He's a decent finisher imo, much better than the likes of Sissoko.

He is also very good in our midfield short passing game. He is the best corner, and indirect free-kick, taker by a country mile (IMHO), and it is noticeable that Toby's goals from corners drying up has coincided with Coco's absence. And I think you are being a little harsh on his finishing - it was good in Italy, and there were clear signs it was improving. As I pointed out above, it was him getting his head in where the Sun don't shine late on that got us a draw at Goodison.

I think if there's one criticism of Lamela it's that sometimes he's a bit too panicky and frantic on the ball and that can lead to some carelessness. But you can't deny he produces goalscoring chances and pops up with the odd goal too.

I can't see him being anything approaching his best until next season though.

A lot depends on which Lamela we get. If it’s the Lamela from 15/16 then great (yes, I’m aware that this is highly unlikely until he’s had half a dozen games). That player is more useful than both of Sissoko, Nkoudou and a viable alternative to Dele, Eriksen and Son.

His struggle will be getting the game time when he’s had no pre season, no friendlies. If will be bloody impressive if he can get where we need him to be.

Once he's back he'll obviously be given time to get back up to speed but then he has to play well and stay injury free, if not, I think the decision will be a pretty easy one to take and we'll sell.

IF he can regain his fitness recovering both mentally and physically I think he'll be very well suited to 3-4-2-1 as would allow him more freedom to roam a little more centrally.

Would be a very good addition to squad as would give more options (Sissoko shouldn't be played further up :eek:).

One of the few players we have that will look to pass it first time at pace whether in to feet or round the corner, and then go on a burst for the return.

An attribute that is greatly underestimated, especially when teams come to park the bus.

Have we exercised that officially? Because without it he'd run out at the end of this season, right? (unless I'm really thick which is possible)
Have you met Daniel Levy?

No way he wouldn't exercise it, even if it just means getting a bigger fee. (in no way am I endorsing the sale of Erik)

Realistically he isn't really worth much at the moment, certainly no one would buy him without him getting a decent amount of games under his belt. Is he likely to get those games at Spurs this season? So you'd have to weigh up whether a 2 year option - which would cost the club over £7M in wages, would be worth it. Also, as soon as that 2 years begins, his value's immediately dropping because he's already nearing the point where he has a year left and can negotiate to leave on a free anyway. So I guess you could exercise it to sell next summer, but it's very debatable whether anyone would pay money for him and take on substantial wages.

Personally I think they'll either decide he's worth keeping and give him a proper new contract, or just release him.
