If Lamela keeps adding goals, there's no way Poch can leave him on the bench. He would become one of our most complete players (well, if you forget that amputated right foot some fans keep claiming he has). Dele and Son better watch out!

It's Southend.

Gently wading into the Lamela thread by making a general observation that it is perfectly possible for any player can improve significantly under a great coach. Under Poch we have seen previous divisive players such as Walker, Rose, Trippier and even Eriksen and Son at times, develop into top stars for us. I still believe that the Argentine has loads more to offer us and has the ability to reach his fantastic potential if he can stay fit this year. Love or loathe him, it takes a strong character to bounce back from an extremely challenging spell injured and off the pitch traumas; his form towards the end of the campaign was very promising. This season could see him convert moments of brilliance into sustained success. More than any other player I am excited to see how he can push on.

It would be better if he could add goals this season as well
Fair comment - he clearly has the talent but needs to stay fit and focussed. All of our attacking players should be contributing more where it matters.

It’s his season to really push on. Clean slate after the injuries, and a solid preseason, with plenty of playing opportunities because of the absent WC players.

I really liked him playing that false 9 role while Harry was injured. If he can stay fit and add some regular goals it could be good times.

It's Southend.

He also finished last season with a hattrick against Leicester, to be fair. It's a small sample size, but it may be that he's rediscovering his goalscoring aptitude from his time at Roma.

Also worth noting he was our second top scorer in 2015/16. He was actually really quite good that year, before the injuries.

Remember his goal at Everton at the start of the 16/17 season thought he would kick on sadly he got injured. Feel like he’s always been playing catch up getting fit. Hopefully this is his year.

Much maligned and abused player.
Show em Erik.
Essential not only for the press, combative attitude
but for skill assists and hopefully goals.
Poch's representative on earth.

Is it cos he's Argentinian?.

I'm not a huge fan of Lamela and think he'd be not to difficult to upgrade , when he's good he's very good but he's a bit of a 1 in 10 match performer a bit like Jenas used to be , it looks like he's staying so hopefully he can
Kick on and prove his worth this season and he's certainly got the attitude to do it , failure to kick on this season will put me firmly in the Lamela out camp tho.

1 in 10 performer - it’s a shocker our actual manager still rates him so highly with experts like yourself so sure he isn’t up to much.

I'm not an expert and I'm not claiming to be one , good luck to Lamela I've just never been that impressed with him , hopefully I will be in the future now he looks like he is here for a few more seasons.

I remember just before we signed him I was traveling and met a Roma fan. He was saying he was the only youngster he had seen at Roma who was better than Totti.

Only one man’s opinion of course.

For whatever reason it hasn’t happened for him yet. Mostly injuries.

I remember after that header against Everton I thought he was going to have his break through season, then he got injured.

I still believe.

He’s basically the epitome of Argentinian football: incredibly stylish and skillful, but more than able to lay on a crunching tackle or gouge someone’s eye when it’s needed.

If (and it’s a big “if”) he can stay fit and get a good number of starts (25-30 in all comps) then I could see him having a really productive year. He’s got it in him, without a doubt. He just needs to stay fit and match-sharp. He does that, he’ll produce.

Well Eriksen, Dele and Son are all better then Lamela so poch probably will be able to

People acting like Lamela’s only problem was not scoring goals, I’m not saying Lamela won’t improve and play a big part but he will have to improve in quite a few areas to oust one of those three

He looked really good during the 2016/17 pre season and also scored that 1-1 goal at Everton. Obviously he was shafted by injuries and other things soon after, but as long as he's can stay fully fit I can see him really push on this time around.

Better in which ways? Those three players you mentioned can be quite amazing players from time to time, but they also tend to disappear a bit too much and having regular frustrating patches (though I think Eriksen is begining to grow as a player and finding a more consistent top form).

Lamela can also be pretty amazing from time to time, but the main reason he hasn't been as consistent as we would like him to has been mostly related to injuries. If he has better luck with injuries, he will be putting some real pressure on both Dele and Son.

Besides scoring more, I really don't see other ways in which Dele and Son can be said to be better than Lamela. If Lamela starts scoring as much as them, I have no doubt in my mind he will regain his status in the squad as a default starter.

Of those four he's the worst scorer- fine- but he's the 2nd best passer and the best defender, so I don't think it's so cut and dried. Horses for courses fella.
