Welp, he came on against BVB and you could hear his knees creaking from yer couch as he gently jogged around. After 5 mins the creaking decreased some because he just decided to walk instead.
What exactly were you expecting him to do in that very restricted period of time?

He did run about a bit though. He also held the ball up on the touch line well and then was blatantly fouled but for some reason the ref didn't give it.

He basically did exactly what Poch would've wanted in the last few minutes, and Dortmund had won a free kick or corner he would've been a valuable defensive asset there too.

You guys delude yourselves with this signing. Got the same 'hmmmm this doesn't feel right at all' feeling I had with VJ.

Round peg.

If I end up eating shit, fair play. Would much prefer he prove an effective deputy, than be right, and he prove not.

The below is fairly apt, and old bobbins isn't exactly scared to criticise when someone isn't up to it...

I mean this with the greatest respect, but you are spouting a load of old cobblers here. If you can't see the value, in a squad where we were totally reliant on Kane to give our attack a focal point, of signing a guy who has won everything and has already proven himself in this league at a lesser team, who has played the highest level for European giants and who offers the same physical and mental attributes as Kane, then you sir have finally gone mad.

I saw VJ wasn't right for us before we finalised the deal. :watching:

All I got was folk whining at me that 'pace is overrated'.

How can you even compare the two players given the difference in what they have achieved in the game

Unless you are just using it to big yourself up for the fantastic foresight that an unproven, young striker from a league notorious for making average strikers look good might not work out?

Trust my gut, mate. What can I tell ya. If he does the business then I'll suck up the shit that'll be thrown at me.

It's more the type of player he is and type of team we are now. It just simply doesn't feel like the right fit.

If Kane gets injured - touch wood he stays injury free this season - we could have him in for a long stretch and I just can't picture it working. I am trying, trust me.

To get him involved in games, as he was hardly having a touch when he came on.

Incidentally I don't view Llorente as a Kane replacement - he's a different type of player. So whilst the assumptions from some doubters might be that it's an odd transfer due to the fact that he doesn't exactly fit our current system, that may well be the entire point.

He allows us to play in a different way, and to offer different threats. He also brings a vast wealth of experience and a winning mentality which - and this really can't be overstated - is so valuable to this group of players right now.

They are on the verge. Right on the bleeding edge of doing something special. A little push from a guy or two who have done it all before could be exactly what they need. Hugo knows this.

Poch on Llorente:

He breaks with your policy though of signing older players?
I think it's important, it's not easy to have the facility to sign players like Llorente. It was an amazing chance for us and I think he decided to sign for us, I think it's fantastic because he will bring very good experience and then that culture, to compete – because competing is different to playing, and winning is different to trying to win. He can translate that feeling that is so important for our squad.

No need for shit throwing, anyone reasonable will know you'd prefer to be wrong. Same reason why I don't rub it in people's faces that I thought Kane would make it, or that Bentley would flop. We're all just guessing ultimately.

Oi, less of the "old" @BringBack_leGin

Apologies squire!

As I said previously in the thread, Llorente is a classic Poch No.9 going on the evidence of what he has done thus far in his managerial career. He wants them to be a focal point, to occupy the backline, pin defenders, create space for others, and bring others into the game. Rickie Lambert was this type of player, and it's just continued from there.

If you look at it through that prism, then you can see why Janssen was signed. The raw ingredients are in place with his hold up play and line leading. In his best moments last year you got glimpses of this, where he'd pin defenders as the ball was played into him and then a lay off for the 3rd man run (see Son's goal vs. Swansea for example). Overall though, he's just not quite there. In body/mind he cant quite keep pace with the game, and to be fair I think some of our other players were a little slow in cottoning on to how to link up with him - apart from Son who did strike up some link with him and made those runs.

Llorente will be in to do the same job basically, just to a better standard and with more consistency. You'd hope he can deal with the tempo and intensity, his touch will hold up under pressure, his movement will be smarter etc. etc. all things Janssen couldn't quite get to grips with. But, like Janssen, he will need those runners and players to compliment what he is bringing to the team.

Kane is the anomaly really, purely because he's a really good football player. He offers that line-leading aspect, plus a whole load more stuff as well. He's nearly the total package. But you cant just go out and sign 'someone like Kane', they're such a rare breed.
