It simply amazes me that so many fans here think we can get a hot prospect that will get us 10-15 goals to play second fiddle to Kane. I tend to think Spurs fans a little more realistic, Morata himself basically said there was no way he would do it, Rashford, who I think will be a very special player can't even do it at u United. What do some of you guys want seriously?

The only way we will get a serious goal scoring back up is if we drop Kane more, do you really think that will improve us?

Morata is a striker not a wide man. People are saying we should look for a player who has presence but plays predominantly as a wide forward. Not someone who would directly compete with Kane.

Son is practically the only goal scoring threat we have who can take on players and go wide if need be. Dele, Eriksen, Lamela, etc are all more comfortable centrally.

Personally, I think a good wide forward was what we were after to complete the window. Just didn’t happen.

Again this is just "forum talk" tell me a wide forward that can play as a striker and give you 5-10 goals a season?

For the benefit of those who post their 'expert' opinions with the certainty of a religious zealot, this is about the most sensible post on the matter I've seen.

Should he have scored that chance? Of course. But he didn't. Players, very good players, have missed far worse and that doesn't define their careers or them as players. Except it seems, here on SC.

Indeed. I think some people need to have a look at Llorente trophy cabinet and the games he has played in. He is a quality player.

If he doesn't take those kinds of opportunities what is he for?
You might just as well put the Trophy Cabinet on.
Might be more mobile.

If you want your backup striker to do just as well as your main sharpshooter, you've got to look at how Pep rotates between Jesus and Aguero. Pep is not afraid to bench Aguero in certain PL or CL games thus allowing Jesus to develop some game time progress.

I am not at all suggesting that we should do that with Kane but had we signed Jesus to be our backup, do you think he would be as useful to use as he is now to City considering how often we use Kane in practically every game?

It’s more a striker that can play AM. Like Sanchez Rashford martial . But then you look at Liverpool who do fine without an out and out striker. Last season we were fine without Kane. This season it was one game away at OT so hard to judge or say Son isn’t a solution.Basically we have 4 options imo.

1 young striker like an Abraham Happy to be on bench
2 older striker as in Llorente
3 A striker that can play wide so get game time even if Kane fit.
4 rely on AM to make up the goals

For me 3 is the ideal option , and sonny isn’t far off that.

I don't really think the issue is whether or not we have the right back up striker. For me this season, the issue so far is that we have too few players in the starting 11 who within some reason can be assumed to account for a goal. We only have a small handful of players who have scored so far, and between them, Kane aside, they haven't scored THAT many goals. We need more players on the pitch at the same time who are capable of semi-frequently deciding the game.

Rashford can play wide but its far from his best position, Martial is a wide man IMO and rarely plays as a ST for United. IF there was any chance we could get Abraham I would be exceedingly happy.

Our problems are solved :).
You joke, but this was essentially what he was bought for in his first season, the same window we were heavily linked to Werner as well iirc. I think Llorente/Janssen were bought as another option, someone for Kane to play off of as a 10 like he did earlier in his career with Ade under Sherwood and Soldado in Poch's first season (at times). What we as fans want and what Poch wants may be two separate things.

Poch explains why Llorente cannot be compared to Janssen
Date published: Friday 24th November 2017 9:13

Mauricio Pochettino has dismissed concerns regarding Fernando Llorente’s form, saying that he and Vincent Janssen are incomparable.

Llorente is yet to score for Tottenham since joining this summer, having played 14 games in all competitions.

The Spaniard has only started three times however, twice in the Carabao Cup and then against Real Madrid in the Bernabeu.

Some onlookers have compared his struggles to those of Janssen, who joined the club in summer 2016 but scored just six goals in 35 games before leaving on loan for Fenerbahce.

Asked whether it was a worry that Llorente had not yet scored, Pochettino replied: “He came close the other day.

“He needs to keep going. I am so happy with him, his attitude is fantastic and he is a great professional. I think he brings not only like a player to help the team on the pitch, but helps the team off of it too – a lot of positive things.

“He only needs time. He was out for a lot of months. In Swansea he didn’t do the pre-season and of course that shortened his preparation. He needs time. But I am so happy with him. All that we expect from him he is delivering.

When it was put to him that Llorente’s struggles can be compared to those of Janssen, Pochettino scoffed.

“I think it’s completely different,” he said. “Two different cases.

“You cannot compare Janssen with Llorente. I think they’re two different profiles in everything.”

I thought this was going to be a great signing when we signed him but I'm really starting to lose faith. I knew he wasn't a speedy guy but I really hoped he was going to be faster and sharper than this. I don't think you can use the "we're not playing to his strengths"-argument after today either. We had plenty of crosses and corners but he just wasn't there. Not sharp enough.

The fans are not asking for another Kane. All I want is somebody who can score a goal! Something Llorente has failed to do!

You do recognize that when they put 9 people in the box - winning headers is difficult - right?

Of course, but isn’t he supposed to be a specialist in those kind of situations? If he’s not able to win those headers I don’t know what he can offer. What’s making me slightly optimistic is that he took some time to get going in Swansea, but at the moment it’s not looking good.

Hasn't been anywhere near as effective as I'd hoped. Can't we just buy Werner or something fml

Worst signing in a long time..! do not understand at all why we let Jansen go for this piece of shit?
its clear he has come for his last big pay check (well it must be more than Swansea even with Levy)
He doesn't care, look at him laughing after the NLD lst week and his control v Dortmund on Tues night - he was a good player but he is shocking now

I badly want to hear from @JJetset who I respect as ITK as to what happened and why we signed him over pace on deadline day and eqully did we get a sell on clause as I doubt he will be here much longer - I hope anyway as he is the most pointless signing (Njie/GKN) its what costs us again and we all said it on Sept 1st but Levy cant see it
