Player Watch: Fernando Llorente

Judgement on Llorente is very one sided at present. The guy is not playing well and that is a given but as always when the spotlight falls on an individual player it is looked at in isolation and focuses on only him.

One of the biggest problem for Llorente is the style we play which is geared to a mobile short quick passing. Quickness between Kane Alii and Eriksen This is just not Llorente. He does not belong in that approach. To make him effective he needs someone playing much closer to him, a genuine second striker and many more crosses so that he or the second striker can feed off the service This is alien to our current style and it is very hard to change for a one off game or even last 10 -15 minutes.

The answer really is to find someone who will understudy Kane but that will not be an expensive "name" It will be an up and coming or someone who maybe cannot manage more that 20 games a year ( similar situation to Vorm being LLoris understudy) Maybe a Sturidge type if he is not fixated on being in the world cup / England place
I agree with everything you say which raises the question, why the hell dis we by him then? Should have spent the money on a up and coming. To be fair I have to think Poch and the coaches thought he could be used to change it up. Bring on a big man who is a good header of the ball and might get you a goal when you can’t pass through a team. Problem seems to be he can’t even do that. I really think every time we play him it’s a waste of a place that Son, Lamela or now Lucas could play in.

I think your hitting the nail on the head here but we've not needed to go down this route really with Kane staying fit and doing what he does (and again improving) but I think he has been a good influence to the team and the younger players around him in training it sounds like.

Well that would at least be a contribution of some kind, not that I have heard that mentioned before?

Kane is a talent vampire for strikers. Anyone we buy he just slowly feeds off over the year and absorbs their skills.

From fb.

Llorente has more goals in 2018 than Aubameyang and Lacazette combined.

^ that’s a video btw :D

Well I never saw that coming. There was an ad at half time saying Llorente 9/2 for next goal and I thought ‘money down the drain’ good job I’m not a betting man.

Let's hope he can kick on from this, cos he has great pedigree/experience and is a guy to have in the squad

I love how a guy who’s won the World Cup, the Euros and the Champions League has to bag three against Rochdale in the snow before some on here start taking him seriously as a footballer

I turned to my dad at half time and pointed out how lacklustre Llorente had been. His movement was poor and he barely seemed interested. He agreed....

Cue the second half hat trick!

Pleased for him, it should give him a massive boost - even if he won’t get many minutes in coming weeks.

Took the first goal really well in particular. Been a fierce critic of him and he has a looonng way to go but fuck me it's great to see him show a bit of quality for once.

Looks like I kick started this thread just in time. That first goal was a thing of beauty. Hopefully Harry can nick that from his arsenal as well!

The fact of the matter is he hasn't played well enough to be taken seriously, only 3 months to go until the end of the season. He has to push on from tonight if he wants to remain with us next season.

To be fair, he played only 30 minutes in the World Cup win (coming on as a sub in a game already won) and didn’t play at all during the Euros.

He played 5 mins of the CL.

I am not trying to make light of his achievements, but well...actually, I am.

I would actually say his time at Swansea was the best of his career.

I think he is a good footballer, but perhaps not a great fit for our squad or style of play, despite scoring three tonight.

Definitely hoping this boosts him and he can be an option for us in his last few months with the club.

Definitely wrong on Swansea being best time of his career, 2011–12 he was awesome for Bilbao (29 goals in 53 games), even his first seasons for Juventus was impressive (and they won the league).

Yeah, fair enough. I didn’t see a great deal of him at Bilbao, but his record was impressive.

Not being down on him, but he didn’t kick a ball when Spain won the Euros and he made one cameo sub appearance when they won the World Cup, so it’s not as if he was a massive part of those successes. He’s never won the Champions League either.
