How longs a piece of string? Only saw him play once so can't make a judgement, has good reviews but until he does it against decent competition consistently then the jury is out.

Firstly he has to be a regular starter for a League 1/ Champ side. Didnt manage that last year, but he obviously has potential.

Is his record anywhere near Barnard's yet?

Too true.

We have seen ultra-prolific strikers in the youth ranks all too often - who have never stepped up to the first team squad.

I joined a chorus that called for them to be given their chance and yet they have never excelled to any point where they have made the management (of the time) look like buffoons for not giving them a chance and letting them go - even at a lower level.

I refuse to either get excited about the Harry-Kane, likewise, I refuse to write him off as just another great white hope.

Or Fenn's or Allen's or one of the many other prolific kids we've had who couldnt step up.

That's the problem, we're all so desperate for a young Owen or Rooney to come through the ranks we put unfair pressure on the kids and then throw a strop when they don't make it and are released.

Actually Barnard was not much of a goal-scorer at that age; it was only under Clive Allen's coaching that he found his scoring boots. Also he was very different type of player, he was never big on flair, his game was all about defending from the front and making life hard for defenders by not giving them the chance to settle; that is why injuries have taken such a toll on him. His game needs pace and exceptional stamina. Still a decent player though, with a career average of 0.37 goals per game which is not bad for someone who is not just a goalscorer. It will be interesting to see how he gets on in the Championship this season.

In recent years the most prolific youth strikers we have had were Pekhart, whose massive bulk made him a freak at that level, and Dawkins, who was a terrific finisher without being exceptional technically; again injuries mean we will never know what sort of player he could have been.

Kane is probably the best prospect we have had in this department since Terry Dixon, but with the advantage of not having an unfixable knee and not being an arsehole.

He still has an awful lot to prove, but I would love to see him given an outing against Hearts; much as I would have loved to have seen Barnard given more opportunities younger.

obika is bad, very bad

It gives me no pleasure whatsoever to concur with this assessment. From what I have seen of him, I don't know why he wasn't jettisoned from the youth set-up long ago.
But who knows - he might turn out to eb the one who steps up.

Obika should get his chance before Kane I hope.

No, no he shouldn't

He hasn't managed to establish himself anywhere. He looked well out of place at every team he was at last year except a few games at Yeovil.

I'd hope not. Having seen him for Yeovil, I'd be amazed if he makes it anywhere above mid Championship level. If he gets a chance in our first team then we've seriously ballsed up our striker recruitment. He looks a decent, hard-working big lad, but nowhere near good enough for us and I'm surprised he hasn't been let go yet to be honest.
