Am I the only one who can never figure out if :stupid: actually means "I agree", or if it's just a sarcastic way of saying "you're stupid"?

It's very hard to tell sometimes, like the way it's been used in this thread.

I have to say there are quite a few spurs fans on this site who do not have the potential to be anything more than conference level posters.

Kane is VERY highly rated, I have seen him for the youth team and he seemed head and shoulders above everyone else in that team. He has a future this lad, I would rather he played than Pav anyday of the week, and I thought he did ok on Wednesday. People are saying about loaning him out to the Championship, not a bad idea but I think he will be in an around the Spurs first team sooner rather than later.

Just a note on Livermore, on Wednesday he put alot of effort into that game and IMO played well.

If people have to slag off members of the team that played on Wednesday, please start with Bassong!

An excellent point made comparing him to Pav, that was a better performance than Pav turns in wasn't it?

Bassong is not even worth discussing, he doesn't try and always makes mistakes, a poor man's Kaboul, who fair play to him is developing under the guidance of King.

Remember Bale's debut at Old Trafford? You could see that he had everything

Kane doesnt have any pace, lacks strength (which he can improve) and seemed out of his dept vs PAOK and every other game I've seen him play at the 'top level'.

I have to say there were glimpses last night about his potential, a few good touches, getting in decent areas, working hard for the team defensively (closing down defenders). But really he needs to go out on loan in January, and start banging the goals in, hopefully in the Championship.

Whoever compared Bale at 18, to Kane needs their head tested.

Bale was awesome on his debut for us. Against Man U, he showed pace, verve, a good left foot and was our best player. Few weeks later, scored a free kick against the scum. He showed his potential.

I'm afraid to say Kane has shown many a heavy touch, a lacklustre work rate, and a lack of pace, and its not just this game, its 5-6 games against very poor opposition.
One good touch at the edge of the box doesn't redeem that.....because he then took an extra touch causing Piennar to be offside, and then overhit the pass.

When youngster come in, especially forwards, they need to be fearless, he didn't play that way. I'd love to have seen a positive, but I would be clutching at straws.

Bale had already 50+ games ranging from Championship to full International under his belt. Hardy a fair way to judge, especially considering Gareth is one of the brightest prospects in World football now.

Kane is a very good prospect, not every young player will break through with the impact of Rooney and Bale. Look at Connor Wickham for fuck's sake.

How's lukaku doing at the moment?

Here's a player that has had the opportunity to develop his game and yet he looks as clumsy as Wenger at a nativity play!

It's tough to make your mark at a big club but it's tougher when your own fans lose faith when your career has barely begun

It really pisses me off when so-called fans are so quick to write off young players. Do these armchair experts think they can tell more about a player in the course of a couple of hours casual telly watching than can our combined coaching staff who work with them in training every day and analyse their every touch? Or perhaps they think the club only offer kids contracts to make up the numbers? If a youngster is under contract then it because Harry and the coaches think there is a possibility they might make it at Premiership level. If they select them to play in a first team game, any first team game, they think they really have a chance; if they keep on selecting them they have done all what was expected of them first time out and the coaching staff are happy with their progress. And if they are 18 and they are anywhere near the first team it is because they think they are a bit special.

But what really makes the difference between the contenders and the could-have-beens is self-belief. When kids like Harry Kane play the fans need to get right behind them; otherwise the "they'll amount to nothing " sneering is likely to become self-fulfilling prophecy.

1) Why get so angry? It's a mesageboard and people are going to ave different opinions and analysis and as some are better writers than others there'll always be exaggerated posts declaring someone "shit" instead of writing a more in-depth view.

2) As armchair fans or however you want to describe our supporters who don't go to every game we are allowed a view. We also have been watching Spurs for a long time and can often see when someone has potential and when someone doesn't. I remember watching Sol Campbell play up-front and fans were grumbling that he was useless, Steve Carr was accused of not being able to cross and Lennon had no end product whatsoever. They all did/do pretty well for us. On the other hand I've seen fans get excited about Darren Caskey, Steve Slade and the high number of youngsters Graham was playing.

Sometimes fans get it right and sometimes they don't. I've seen more than enough Spurs managers and coaches get it completely wrong for me not to have completely blind faith in them.

3) Yes self-belief is important and it's up to our coaches/staff to instill this in them. More than anything though they need a strong character. Plenty of our top players have gone through hard times. The successful ones man-up and get through while others shrink. Our players aren't as weak-willed and delicate as some make out and if they are they can do one.

1) It is not so much the views expressed as the dismissively emphatic way in which they are expressed (though I suspect at least one of the posters of being a troll); and if all a poster can contribute is that someone is "shit" it is not their writing skills but their thinking skills they need to work on.

2) Of course sometimes managers get it wrong and fans get it right; but I am referring specifically to circumstances where the manager has a lot more evidence to work with.

3) As for our players not being as weak-willed and delicate as some make out, I point you to Sebastian Bassong, part of a top four defence two years ago then he loses his place in the team and now... In fact most of our first team fringe are looking desperately low in confidence, and they are not kids. That is why Harry is so keen to bring in players like Friedel and Parker, because the sort of mental toughness they have is not actually that common.

1) I don't like it either but it's not something to get angry over. Some are crap writers, some are stupid and some were born in the tabloid age when players are either world class or shit, there's no in-between.

2) Of course managers have more to work on. They have decades of first hand experience in the game and get to work the players in-person everyday. The vast majority acknowledge this fact. But managers still get things wrong and from the outside I can sometimes see when a player isn't ready for our first team (Kane) and when someone is ready he just needs a chance (Bale). Football would be much duller if we didn't share these opinion.

3) Yes some players are quite weak-minded. Bassong has gone from playing every game to being 5th choice. He is also playing sporadically and with a midfield in-front of him that isn't giving the best protection. I think these are the reasons for his poor performances rather than people writing him off on the internet and this finding its way to him and then he loses confidence.

Bigger forwards, on average i suspect take long to develop than the smaller, quicker strikers. Like a defender, big forwards need to work on their position and anticipation skills, something that comes with experience.

He has been coached from an early age though. His coaches must have realised that he didnt have pace from an early age and should have coached him on his positiives.

Although saying that, maybe he just isnt good enough? I mean how many of you realise that we have had 100's of players come through our books in recent years and only a handful have made it in the EPL.

I was a little surprised and disappointed that he was subbed when he was against POAK. We'd just got Bale and Walker on to increase the number of crosses and then took off the guy that could benefit the most. Seemed a bit harsh and kinda took some of the pressure off in my opinion. He was just giving us a different option.

I understand the sentiments EB but lets be honest, what fans think of a youngster really doesn't make much difference to whether a player makes it or not. In general, fans are pretty forgiving of any young player that has come through the system from the academy, and I have never ever heard fans berate such a player no matter how poor a game they are having.

Great players will shine almost immediately, very good players with the right mentality will make it at some level regardless of the opinion of fans.

Kane was highly spoken of on here by a few people, and I think it's not just that his performances have been very uninspiring, it's that he hasn't seemed to really have that "grasp it" mentality either. Maybe it's nerves, and that in itself is a factor that may shape his career. But he's had a few outings now and whilst he has shown a couple of nice touches, he really hasn't grabbed those opportunities by the bollocks has he ?

He's probably no more limited than Defoe from what I've seen, but Defoe for all his failings, has that certain mentality - that self belief you spoke of - that seems to drive him.

More than anything, I've been disappointed that Kane hasn't grabbed his chance to shine with more gusto. He's looked timid and lacking in belief.
