If he was genuinely outstanding he would be on our bench by now. If he isn't and needs to be coached slowly into the first team like most of our British players then he is over-hyped. Its probably the later

I will rep you, not for agreeing but for actually bothering to read it all seeing as it came out much longer than I expected before my waffling kicked in
It was well written and waffled! I agree with your sentiments. I watched Kane for the first time in this match and throughout the match I thought he was a waste of space! You hit it on the head when you suggested that if at 18 he cannot take criticism where others have been very mature at that age- Giggs, Owen, Lennon Huddleston etc- then he is the wrong job!

Having followed our club a long time I would say that over many years I have seen numerous 'home-product' players try and fail to establish themselves at Spurs. Perhaps it was because we were known as a 'buying club' thrrought the decades of the sixties and seventies, a reality that has stayed with us since those times. Chris Mcgrath, Chris Jones, Terry Gibson were three pretty low key attempts to bring forwards through by us. Perhaps Mark Falco is a more appropriate player with which to compare young Harry Kane. He attended Edith Cavell school, lived in Hackney and played for local side Fields United. Falco played for us from 1979 - 1986 scoring 98 goals. Despite making 236 Spurs appearances and being in several successful sides Falco always seem to have more to prove than most imported players. This is the danger for Kane. People look at the young bloke and assume that as a home product he won't be as good. As has been said he is only 18 and already he has a mountain to climb with many of our supporters doubting he can do it:(

My dad moans a lot about Mark Falco, he always tells it (and do bare in mind that much my dad tells me turns out to be incorrect when I look it up) that at the time we had two youngsters on our books in him and Kerrie Dixon and basically had to choose one or the other (why we would need to do this I don't know) but he says we made the wrong choice and kept Falco who he describes as fairly average whilst Dixon went on to have a much better career at Chelsea.

Its one of the stories I have heard a million times along with how him and my granddad watched a friendly game against Orient one time and it was obvious to everyone that we should sign their centre back but we never and he went on to be a good player for Newcastle (Glen Roder I believe)

Anyway as for Kane, I think a lot of the excessive comments in regards to him are born from the level of hype that surrounded him on here. Many posters were talking him up like he was amazing and we had a future England striker on our hands (get ready for the Hurricane/harrykane etc) and his reputation kind of preceded him especially to fans with spurscommunity exposure, so when his actual performance were far less spectacular than expected it created a bit of a back lash.

I can only speak for myself, personally I never expected THAT much from him although I did it expect him to look better than he has done against the type of opponents we have played.

His penalty against Hearts made me question his mental strength to make it at the top level, and every time I have watched him he has failed to impress me and not looked like a player on the verge of being a top talent or even a player with the potential to be one....this is of course just my personal opinion.

I am not claiming to be an expert nor am I claiming that my judgement is gospel and I cannot proven wrong, of course I hope Kane can prove me wrong.

I do however think we have the right to make these judgements if we feel to, and to express them on here as this is one of the aspects of football support that fans like to discuss and the board provides an outlet for that.

Good luck to Kane, I would love him to prove me and everyone in agreement with me wrong but I very much doubt he will ever establish himself as a Spurs first teamer and I would be surprised if he was to establish himself as a EPL striker let alone and England international in the coming years.

Nice to see Harry Kane get his first goal tonight

his little run before was half decent too

Great for him to get that goal tonight as with us crashing out of Europe he might not get another chance this season (depending on who we draw in the cup, I guess he may play against Cheltenham too)

Annoying that it was our last group game, I think all he needed was a goal to get his confidence up a bit after that penalty miss against Hearts. He would of got it against PAOK if it wasn't for that bugger on the line and his arm...

I was thinking exactly the same. If that one had gone in against PAOK then he would be on two goals in six games and everyone would be saying what a talent he was.

Oh ye of little faith!

yea you are right.... a close range finish against a bunch of part time Irish league players is clearly indication he will make it with us

Fair play to him, he took his goal well and his run was half decent (although he really should have made the pass) I hope that gives him some confidence and aids his development

Now we are out of the Europa cup it would seem fairly pointless keeping him and he should probably be loaned somewhere he can get first team football and develop/prove his worth

After all if he is ever to be good enough to play for us he should be good enough to go to a decent championship team and score a shed load.

Yep. I think that goes for Kane, Rose, Carroll and maybe even Livermore.

I think the only way that Kane would get a sniff at the first team right now is if both Pav and Gio leave, nobody comes in, and one of the other 3 gets injured.

He looks like he's still growing so is a bit ungainly but he's getting in the right positions (or close anyway) and showing some good skills, a few very nice passes (and a few woeful ones).

Smarter men than me (or you) seem to think he has real potential.

I can't tell what kind of player he's going to be yet, he looks fairly tall and threw himself at a headed opportunity (just missing) in an earlier round so that could be part of his game that we haven't seen. He went on a mazey run yesterday which caught the eye and polished off a tidy finish.

He could be the next Bergkamp or the next Dozzel - none of us have seen enough to judge.

Interesting prospect with a hell of a youth record.

I was quite happy for us to sell Bale to Forest for £2m after the Christmas defeat to West Brom the other year. Therefore, I'm making no further comment on this thread!

One thing I did notice last night is that he seems to have good awareness of where other players are. He might not quite have the ability to do something about it yet, but the fact he's got that awareness is a big plus.
