I though he kept the team ticking over tonight. Always making himself available and moving the ball on quickly.

He seems to pick up heavy knocks during games. Twice tonight it looked like he would have to go off

That’s not enough for me, especially if he is playing with a DM. That was wanyama job tonight. Against Newport surly winks should have been looking to create. But as said will give benefit of doubt as 1st game back. He will get his chance against lesser opponents, can’t see him featuring in the big games if dembele is fit.

It was his first game back after his injury, couldn't really ask much more of him tonight.

Not sure why people can't get this.

He's shown on plenty of occasions that he has the ability to carry the ball forward, play effective, efficient passes between the lines, while also remaining diligent defensively.

People should remember that his performances against Madrid were exceptional, and all teh better given he was playing with Sissoko as his midfield partner.

He's still the best prospect at Spurs and one of the best in the country. That hasn't changed.

I think sadly he may miss out on the WC with Englands darling Wilshere back in the side and seemingly fit. Such a shame that he got injured at the height of his momentum/hype.

He'll go alongside Wilshere if he's fit, Southgate isn't going to choose one or the other.

What other central midfield options are there other than Dier, Henderson and Wil****? Delph? Pfft, I'm not English so I dont have skin in teh game, but I think Southgate would be mad not to take him.

He was tidy, but I think it was more a confidence issue than anything. I missed his pirouettes and modric like turns. If you think back to the Fulham away game when he ran the show, he seemed very quiet tonight and actually Wanyama was more the playmaker of the two.

Why are people so surprised that he had a subdued match? The guy is feeling his way back after a period out injured.

It's times like this it becomes apparent that most people here have never played football at a decent level in their life

Because he was playing against a team that is barely a level above an 11 that Wickes could put together?

Nobody is surprised - not sure where you got that from? It's obvious why he played like he did, but that's not to stop people passing an honest assessment of his performance. I'm not saying he was bad, he wasn't. I said he played it too safe - which is more a comment on what he is capable of, which is surging runs, pinging the ball about and actually moving forward sometimes. Saying that, after a long lay-off, it's no surprise that he did play within himself to an extent. I still think he's one of our brightest prospects.

In the opening 20 mins he was one of the very few who could get the ball under control and complete a pass. He was also busy and playing forward. He went into his shell as the game went on, whether that was a bit of tiredness or just in keeping with much of what we were doing and just seeing the game out.

The main thing is to get 90 mins and to build up his rhythm and form again.

Needs to be a bit better than “tidy” against Newport imo. Played it way too safe, always backwards or sideways and never took anybody on

Well you missed some moments in the match then. A couple times he split the defense with short runs with the ball as well as made some nice passes forward. The other thing he did, and always does, is offer pressure relief in that players can play him the ball when the team is under pressure knowing that his pass will be somewhere (backwards, sideways, forward) that relieves pressure. Thought it was a good first game back after being out with injury.
