He needs game time and so does Wanyama. I would play them both on Tuesday and bring on Dembele for one of them some time in the second half. And by the way Winks was no worse than anyone else bar Moura and Lamela today.

I'd gladly play them together against Brighton but I don't want to throw them in against Inter in champhions league together.

Do you think they would do worse than the D- men ?
Haha I like that name. But I'm on the record in the line up thread I don't want to see either of them. Play a 4-1-4-1 with Wanyama behind Son, Lucas, Eriksen, Lamela and those 4 behind Kane. Does it stabilize us in midfield? No but it should give us the attacking power to push through and we just have to count on Toby, Jan and Wanyama to clean up everything on defense.

Ordinarily I would agree with that. I think that’s how we played when we beat Man City a couple of years ago . But I don’t think Wanyama is match fit enough yet to carry the entire DM , though I suppose Eriksen or Lamela could drop deeper to help him out. If Wanyama gets back to peak form I would happily see that formation.

smart take and good memory.....we really need Wanyama and Winks to get back to full fitness/ form and for Lamela to stay injury free....COYS!

It can't be worse than how Dier played today. Idk if it could risk him being out for another lord knows how many months then don't do it, but he's up for it I'm all in.

Seeing a lot of unfair criticism of winks rearing its head. He has been out a long time and needs a couple of weeks to get up to scratch.

Do I think he's the answer to our long term CM conundrum? No but he's plenty good enough to be a back up rotation player for us. Just give him some time and a formation that actually suits what we have and he will be fine.

A fit Wanyama and Winks is our best pairing now IMO.

And we should definitely be playing them as a two whichever combination we use.

Well they are both fit now. Just got to get their sharpness up to scratch, and that only comes with game time.
I hope they get that game time. I actually liked what I saw from each of them today, including Wanyama's brief time. Both coming back from long-term injuries, not easy, especially being thrown in against a strong Liverpool team.

And in a shit unsuited formation.

Why do you think Poch did that?
He's clearly tried to match them up and go player for player with them, god knows why. To change your system to go toe to toe formation wise
you either need to have superior players(which we didn't have)or you need to frustrate them and play it defensively(which we didn't). This Pool team have been playing this system for years and know it inside out, of course they were going to do it better than we could.
He's starting to get a bit like Ranieri was at Chelsea. Trying to be too clever every week, and IMO it's not what he's good at. For me it should most of the time be the same formation every week. Tweek it in game by all means, but let's get some familiarity and consistency back into our play ffs.

A bit too clever by half at the moment. Decide on a 4 or a 5 at the back and stick to it. Decide on a formation and stick to it.

The other issue is confidence. People can criticise Dier, but what use is he on the right of a midfield 3 ?

Fucking hell, some people need to rewatch some games from last autumn. To judge him now, when he's just back after such a long spell out is laughable.

Can he get back to that level, or is he forever crooked? Who knows, but save it for when we actually have enough information to actually know.

It was a terrible decision from Poch to throw him straight back into the side in such a big game, especially in a bizarre new formation with the other players around him in dodgy form.

But...I am starting to wonder if Winks is our Jack Wilshere. Homegrown boy that our fans desperately want to succeed because of his roots, some obvious ability but a real lack of consistency and end product. A stellar performance against one of Spain's big two that gets overhyped and put into folklore, but far more regularly delivers ineffective performances where he gets overrun. Terrible injury problems.

He seems like a nice young man, but needs to do far better if he's going to be the answer to our midfield problems this season.

It’s impossible to make any judgement until he gets a run of games.

Is it though? If he'd dominated the midfield people would be raving about him. You can allow for context (which I did in my last post) but if he can take the good then it's only fair he can take the bad as well. Remember, he has played in every game this season except for Newcastle.
