How about we read what's actually be said before jumping to conclusions...
I read what was said, someone just last page literally said ManU and Barcelona were built around similar players in Carrick & Xavi.

But he is a similar player as he plays in their position. No on has said he's the next Xavi or Carrick or he can reach their level, I dont understand your point?

I think its unfair to the kid and its a bit of what the argument is about. People get expectations of what he should be in terms of a player due to who people compare him to. It's like how Poch talks about him and says Iniesta, then people get disappointed when he isn't producing goals & assists.

But I fully understand Poch building up the kids confidence.

Yeah you've taken my point out of context, the previous poster said he is not the type of midfielder we want if we want to go for titles and I argued that players in that style have been integral to two of the most successful teams of all time.

Every young player gets billed as the next so and so and they're often compared to past greats.

It's just one of those things that has always happened and will continue to happen...

But as for this discussion I don't believe he was being compared in that way anyway.

Maybe just some confusion on my part.. and when people say they prefer midfielders like Dembele who dribble to players who are pass first. Obviously Winks is more like Xavi then he is like Dembele in that he is a pass first player but I personally don't see a ton of similiarities in their games. Just like I don't see a ton of similarities in Winks and Carrick either as Carrick would play as the lone holding player but I digress.

I don't think anyone is saying he is as good as iniesta xavi or Carrick, but he has the potential to get somewhere nearish. He is far ahead of all 3 at his current trajectory, but it's all about what he can become.

None of those mentioned had extraordinary goals or assists stats, even when iniesta played further advanced midfield. Xavi didn't look anything special until he was played right of a 3 which was when he was about 25.

For those who think he aint nowhere near top players remember he took on modric and kroos and looked like he belonged at that table. He also took on rakatic and one of barcas finest prospects Arthur.. And looked like he belonged at that table. He's also played against the prems best and doesn't look out of place. For a guy who was unsure whether he would recover properly from his Injury I think he deserves some support from us.

I don't think we know what type of role he will play long term yet but I know his strength like those two is in the transition, I just get irked when winks gets dismissed because he isn't playing 40 yard through balls or isn't a defensive monster like Kante and I find players who are excellent in the transitional phase of play tend to get dismissed as not good enough especially early on in their careers because they aren't who people would pick in their Fifa Ultimate teams.

Fortunately he doesn't log on to SC
I hope.
But in any case
give the boy a break
see how he goes
for the rest of the season
hope he stays injury free
and if he plays poorly say so
if he plays well ,say so
like we do with every other player
whether they are Academy kids or not.

The number of midfielders
in the Premiership
that can tackle and pass well
can be numbered
on the toes of one foot.

@JimmyG2 your poetry posts are the Harry Winks of SC.

They are neat, clever, a little bit different in their creative style and so hard to pigeonhole. But I like to think they have the potential to knit together others’ posts and set the tempo for the forum. If the other players are on the same wavelength... :sneaky:

Iniesta would have made this rhyme

Thought he was pretty good today. Would absolutely love to see him with someone LIKE Ndombele next to him. Would take some of the pressure off of him being the only real distributer in that midfield group.

When he drives forward he has a lot of zip, it's a shame it doesn't happen more often but I'm sure last night in particular he was asked to be careful with the ball. To think we got him for free and how excited we'd be if linked to a 22 year old playing for a top-3 Spanish side who had put some great performances in against uber clubs in the CL...

Just think with Dier next to him it's a bit too defensive against the majority of PL teams

Sissoko might be the answer or a better version of him

Think the end is near for Dembele and Wanyama. Replace them with Rabbiot and Ndombele and are central midfield depth is sorted

I do like the way he manages to hold onto the ball when under pressure, though his decision making at times worries me. Hopefully that will improve with experience and game time.

I just wish he'd impose himself more on games. He seems to play so within himself.

I still don't see him as good enough to be first choice CM for us, it has to be said. We need better in there. I look at how Fabinho is starting to play at Liverpool, absolute leagues above Winks. What he showed against United ability wise was a really high level and he only cost 30 million.

I still just see a less dynamic / aggressive Scott Parker.

Fabinho is 25, Winks is 22 and their not even alike in playing style anyway.

Bizarre comparison.
