I wonder if it went down like this for these two:

*Walks in first day of preseason*

Hey lads welcome back? Hope you’ve had a good rest. How’s about a new contract eh?

Winks and Davies: Yes mate, say no more.

Meanwhile while we have these other weeks/months long protracted discussions elsewhere it’s nice to know we have some great players already here willing to commit.
I agree, news that Davies was in contract negotiations only appeared in the media within the last 48 hours and the media didn't even catch a sniff of Winksy's. It must've been a fairly quick process for both players.

Really pleased for us but especially for Winksy, I'm convinced he can become one of the best midfielders in the league if he stays fit.

I’m putting on record I fancy him for our POTY this year, he’s a lovely footballer, just needs a nice break from injuries

Watching that highlight vid, Winksy can play anywhere in the midfield including DCM

Looking forward to him and NDombele (and Lo Celso) playing together next season

Ossie/Modric like. A pure footballer in my opinion. For all the excellent players we're being linked with, this lad is as much the future as any of them.

The more I think about the idea of Harry Winks and Harry Kane staying healthy for a vast majority of the season, the more I believe in our chances to really put up a fight for the title. Winks is just so freaking good when he's out there healthy and getting a run of matches. What a player.

MOTM for me against Juve. So nice to see him back out there doing his thing. If he could add a killer pass or some goals to his game he would be a star. I think the assists will come eventually - you can see him looking.

Yep, very much my thinking, especially with Skipp also looking good and the new and potentially new signings. Got a strong feeling we'll be top 2 given a decent run on the injury front (none of our players except Lamela seem injury prone as such, and can easily forgive last season when over playing seemed to cause a lot of damage).

Knee jerk reaction (sort of) that I'll get killed for. I'm not thrilled through 2 pre season games with the prospect of Winks being the "DM". Two goals have come directly from players getting in behind him, Ronaldos goal and Martials today.

Maybe I'm being tough but I just don't see him being able to shield a defense and with our likely full back season we need someone who can do that.

edit: and he got passed around to start the Higuain goal.

You won't get any negative reaction from me.
Absolutely no coincidence in my view that we conceded significantly more goals with him playing at DM instead of Dier.
He provides no defensive shield at all, and as he doesn't provide any attacking threat whatsoever, really think he is a luxury player that we don't need in starting line up.
He wouldn't get into any of the other Top 6 sides, other clubs fans that look at things from a neutral perspective don't rate him and see him as our weak link (and yes I am including our full backs)
Really think he is the new Lamela, where we have blinkered supporters that use intangibles to back up what he brings to team, because the numbers just don't add up at all.
Take Champions League final, in 75 minutes we had 0 shots on target and 2 shots in total in 75 mins, then took him off and we dominated from then on, creating numerous chances, because we didn't have him slowing us down. In my view that is no coincidence, he keeps possession but in the main just by receiving the ball and passing it back to player he receives it from, slowing us down totally, and taking no responsibility. But many say he was our best player in the game. Just cannot work it out, thought the days of appreciating sterile possession went with AVB.

Well the Higuain one wasn't on Winks at all. It was down to Vertonghen and/or Georgiou, one of whom should have been marking his run.

Dunno about the Martial one. I mean, Gazza makes a regulation save and it doesn't happen. It was too easy for him to get in behind though. Again, I'm looking at the CB there.

Ronaldo, yeah, he should have been more aware. Don't necessarily think he was in a bad position, but you have to mark the most dangerous man, which was Ronaldo.

The benefits he gives in terms of being able to keep the ball under pressure, spread it wide to the FBs, or play those little passes into midfield which can open up the game far outweigh the negatives though for me.

Re: Martial, Pereira plays a 1-2 to start the move right around Winks and he just starts walking back after his man goes right past him.

There’s always a trade off it’s the Jorginho/Kante argument. Till 15-20 years ago a “holding midfielder” didn’t really exist till Makelele. Obviously you had players that played deeper but he was the one that set it as a trend and gave it a label. Ultimately as said it’s a trade off do you want a technically better player who is more creative or the defensive shield. Ndombele and Sissoko are very box to box so in theory should cover any winks short comings defensively.

Further, our best CM partnership so far under Poche has been the Wanyama/Dembélé axis of beast-il. Neither of them played as a holding midfielder.

Wanyama definitely played as a destroyer. But didn't exclusively sit in front of the back 4, he was more marauding.
