I understand football and have played professionally. I thought I'd say that based on some opinions that if you don't think Winks is world class then you don't know football.
I like Winks. I like his tenacity. But comparisons to iniesta or modric are absolutely ridiculous, regardless of his injury. He's a decent player. Would any of the other big clubs in England buy him? No. Would any other big clubs in Europe buy him? No.
I would love him to surpass what I think he can do, but for me he's a Ryan Mason. Who I also liked because of his tenacity. At best maybe a Scott Parker in his prime, but he's a hell of a way to go to get to that level.
Winksy is a Spurs lad and I love that. I also think it's important for first team players to understand Spurs like he does.

He’s not world class. We don’t know what level he can reach but he’s certainly got the talent to be an influential player for us

I’m sure much would have been said about Kane after same number of appearances. How many actual PL starts has the guy had can’t be many maybe 15-20. You really need to give it a season before you judge. But he’s way above mason imo. It’s weird how some players get a negative wrap for no real reason. I kind of thinks winks falls into this category, and I’m really not sure why. Trust me if he started getting the odd goal people would suddenly change their opinion even though that’s not his game. Just seems players profiles get wildly overrated with a few goals. It’s mainly why people are suddenly rating lamela.

This is so true.

Rubbish! Lamela is rated (and always have been by me) for his tenacity and his don't give up attitude, his vision of seeing a play and bring others into the game with assists. His goals are a welcome bonus.

And back to Winks, many (including yourself it seems) will see him through Lily White eyes just because he is a product of our academy. Other midfielders like Bentaleb, Tom Carroll and even Mason also shared this accolade at some point, where are they now? Winks is a good player but only time will tell whether he will be near anything close to being called world class like Kane, or not quite making it like Carroll and Co.

Think Winks is a big step up on Bentaleb, Carroll and Mason

Mentioning Winks and Bentaleb in the same sentence as Carroll is an insult (to me)

Iniesta, Xavi, Modric etc. are stupid comparisons to make, and wrong for his role in any case.

For me, at first team level he seems to be settling as a player who would play the holding role in a cm3, acting as the pivot and controlling play. Yes he bursts forwards at times, but I don't think he looks so comfortable in advanced positions, and there is a reluctance to get ahead of the ball and he likes to have the play in front of him - see the issues whenever Poch has tried to play him as a side midfielder in a cm3 or diamond midfield as evidence.....

Obviously to play that role he needs to keep improving both with and particularly without the ball, but going forward I see the likes of Fernandinho, Jorginho, Henderson as his contemporaries.

Yep, more of a Jorginho than a Modric.

He's always been risk averse. Always played within himself even before the injury so it's a bit of a leap of faith to think he will suddenly play braver and start taking games by the scruff of the neck. Until he actually shows he can do it, I think those who doubt he can do it are fair in our reservations.

I disagree that he's always been risk-averse. When he was in the academy you could see him take charge of the centre of the pitch and he'd be constantly demanding the ball. As I've said before we have to acknowledge the manager's instructions and the game plan Poch has set out. It's not necessary to make a forward pass everytime he gets the ball for it to be a productive pass.

Currently, I think he is slowly transitioning between being a youngster to be a first choice player and the added responsibility that brings.

With respect, I understand football and have also played professionally and I agree whilst he has a long way to reach the likes of Iniesta and Modric (who incidentally are at the tail end of very successful careers, he has the technique, the tenacity, work ethic and the football intelligence to become much better than Mason.

At 22 years old and barring injuries, I would say he has every chance of enjoying a very successful career.

I think winks has a very high ceiling. It's unfair to compare to Mason, Carroll and bentaleb who are all different players. The injury clearly affected his confidence and he's finding his feet again, think this shows that his profession in games is akin to this. Finishing strong starting slowly. He has performed admirably against real Madrid and also Barcelona with only a handful of first team performances. I think many are being hard on him by saying he could never be world class as he has performed admirably against World class players. Madrid in particular whos midfield are 4 times ECL winners and the absolute definition of world class players.

Midfielders take longer, Winks is fine. At his age we’d just signed Modric who endeavoured to produce nothing more than ‘neat on the ball, flimsy off it’ for a good 18 months longer until halfway throw 09/10. See similar for Xavi, who was always very tidy and had clear talent but didn’t start really bossing it until Deco left in 2008... Xavi was 28 at this point and had always been the fictional cornerstone to more glamourous players.

I’m not saying that Winks will be a Xavi or Modric, I’m just saying that even the two best playmaking CMs of the past two decades were not much more than neat and safe at his age.

It’s mildly amusing that the majority of football pundits think winks is a 10. Clearly shows how much they’ve actually watched him or not.

Though I don't like to say it, the player whose style Winks reminds me of most is probably Jack Wilshere.

There was a point I thought he could play further forward but I’m really not sure he can. Seems to get in a bit of a panic anytime he gets near the box. If he could actually slot some goals, then we’d have player.
