Think Winks is a big step up on Bentaleb, Carroll and Mason
Disagree about Bentaleb, in Poch's first season, he looked like he could be our captain in a couple of years and didn't look many more years away from being world class and he was 3 years younger than Winks is now. Winks hasn't reached that level yet IMO, though mostly due to his injuries.

IMO Nabil was better as a box to box CM/ attacking mid. Truly felt we under utilized his dribbling and attacking instincts by playing him as a DM. Shame though, he would've been a great replacement for Dembele.

Mentioning Winks and Bentaleb in the same sentence as Carroll is an insult (to me)
I think winks has a very high ceiling. It's unfair to compare to Mason, Carroll and bentaleb who are all different players. The injury clearly affected his confidence and he's finding his feet again, think this shows that his profession in games is akin to this. Finishing strong starting slowly. He has performed admirably against real Madrid and also Barcelona with only a handful of first team performances. I think many are being hard on him by saying he could never be world class as he has performed admirably against World class players. Madrid in particular whos midfield are 4 times ECL winners and the absolute definition of world class players.
My equating of Winks to Mason, Bentaleb and Carroll was that they all were a product of the academy so sometimes were overrated imo, nothing to do with their individual playing styles.

I think we're quite level headed when it comes to academy players sometimes even negative. There was many saying they wanted a purchase instead of kane and that he wouldn't make it for an example.

Bentaleb had all the chances and by all accounts is doi g well in shake. Mason was so unlucky before and after us. We never saw his real talent which was up top or as a advanced #10. His injuries way prior to first team action stopped all that. Carol was an Interesting one, where I think the club failed him with wrong positioning in one part and stopping progression with not rewarding good games. He was a striker with a high scoring rate but then moved back because he was too talented to be a striker. This was early academy years. However while he may make a decent midfielder, I've always felt his talent was more suited to an advanced player. Regardless he was not supported either. I don't think we really back our academy boys in the first team. Townshend didn't get much love on the terraces either.

From memory mason was quite prolific in that role.

Comparisons with Winks seem a little off in the positional sense. Winks just needs to stay fit and be brave in the tackle. Although understand his hesitancy after Such a long lay off. Once he builds his confidence I'm.sure we will see the winks that brought the hype.

Wasn't Mason a striker prior to first team duties?
We should have just kept Mason and not bought Sissoko, that was a real fuck up by the club. I know they have different traits but they're both ultimately back up CMs. Would have saved 18 mil we could have used else where, have one more player for the HG quota and a player who loved the club who probably wouldn't bitch too much about being a part time player.

I thought Mason left precisely because he didn't want to be a back up player and that Poch was sad to see him go.

Theres a reason I said probably... haha just a guess, but you may very well be right. If he would have been patient he would have gotten plenty of playtime as much time as Dembele/Winks have been injured since he left.

Few paper rumours he is starting hopefully true.

Update-More concrete rumours suggest on bench.

Could be a career defining night for him on Monday. Must be almost certain to start with Henderson out . If he played well, real chance to make England no 8 shirt his own.

I'm not a professional footballer. I never have been. Phew, I'm glad I got that out the way.

However, if we're playing the let's all pretend we're scouts game I'm in. Firstly, I do think it is still important to go watch players live. And then literally sit there and focus all your attention on that player. I honestly don't think you can get near enough information just by watching the games on TV if you're trying to judge a players current or potential abilities and assets.

Winks for me has a lot more potential than anyone else that's come through the ranks in the CM at spurs in recent times(ignoring the enigma of Bentaleb). Although it's been lacking post injury before that he had a great amount of vision and showed real quality in picking and executing passes both long and short. It's not Carrick or Huddlestone levels on the longer passes. But his next best thing in his lockers more than makes up for that IMO. And that's how quickly he wants to move the ball and that's where I believe the Modric comparisons came in. His quick footballing brain combined with passing quality, that's why those comparisons are made. He is mobile as well as well and a good runner but it's passing, vision and the way he can dictate tempo that sets him apart. I'm basing all of this on pre-injury as what's the point in judging him when he's clearly not quite right.

If he's lucky with injuries and keeps progressing I think the Modric comparisons won't seem so silly. Very much doubt he'll get to that level but there's no reason he can't be a Modric-light. He might even bag a few more goals than him :D. Then again he could go full Bentaleb but I really hope not.

Sitting on the bench
against Croatia
will have done wonders
for his confidence
Nothing ahead of him in midfield
for England stardom
