Hard to imagine him not starting for England after that. I think If they bring back Henderson it will be viewed very much a backward step. Be interesting now if he is 1st choice for us with no injuries.

100% if Henderson is available Southgate will start him over winks. He shouldn’t but he will.

Decent game for Harry tonight. Will have done him wonders playing at that level.

Still feel there's so much more to come when he gets more confident. Can't help but feel he doesn't yet know how good he is.

Fantastic line from Football 365 regarding Harry Winks' game in their player ratings article:

"Had absolutely no right to look like the most Spanish midfielder on the pitch."

The rest of the piece is full of praise for him as well, as is social media:

HARRY WINKS
Had absolutely no right to look like the most Spanish midfielder on the pitch – not against this opposition, not in these surroundings, and not on what was only his second England appearance. Even through early nerves for his teammates he exuded calm and composure, keeping both hands on the wheel and playing at his own pace under immense pressure. One situation saw him twist and turn to thwart a three-pronged Spain press and keep possession, which Barkley promptly lost with the next touch. Let this be the end of Dier and Jordan Henderson forming two-thirds of a midfield trio.

Surely he will start Henderson over Dier rather than Winks? And you could argue that is not a bad shout. Dier and Henderson interchangable in my view but we shouldn't play both.

Lol maybe fickle fans will read this and appreciate he’s a decent player rather than impatiently writing him off as ‘average’ as some have in this thread.

Not convinced tbh. Southgate whole selection of squad pointed to him looking for a new midfield. He’s just had one of the best results in England’s history. I think he’d get slated if he went back to Henderson. And really it’s dier or Henderson. Winks competition should really be dele or Maddison in a 433.

I personally think Pochettino could take a leaf out of Southgates book and go 433 with Dier at the base, able to drop in with the centre backs at will and have a simple remit, Winks as the all rounder keeping things ticking over and then put Eriksen in the Barkley role as the overriding playmaker who pushes further forward in attacks. Then you can choose between Son and Dele cutting in off the left, Lucas and Lamela off the right, and give Kane the freedom to play as he did last night.

Dembele and Sissoko as safety first alternatives to Dembele and Eriksen to close games out when tight is fine.

Given how this forum has been lately, I won't hold my breath.

Lets not get carried away.

IT worked because Spain attacked and left a crazy amount of space when their moves broke down, if we'd played that way against a possession side, I don't think the outcome would've been the same.

Not a lover of Kane in a 3 man attack as he doesn't seem to score from open play in it.
And no one really wants to see Eriksen in a 3 shying away from tackles.
Still prefer 4-2-3-1 with Kane as the main man and the flexibility in the 3 behind him mean that Dele, Lamela, Eriksen, Son and Moura can all have more fluid roles.

Onions and all that, though the implication that Spain are not a possession side is a little bit odd...

As for Kane, if he’s as good as we think he is, he’d score regardless of system.

Regarding Eriksen in a 3, the space he’d have on the ball along with the presence of two braver players in the three would be a fine trade off. He’d essentially have a free role when we have the ball.

Anyway, all this is going too far OT for this thread(sorry) so happy for you to PM me if you want to argue the point.

Spain of old that system gets us nowhere.

Spain under Enrique have been a breath of fresh air, full of attacking intent and no possession for possession's sake in sight.

And Eriksen can still get a free role in a 4-2-3-1 even more so in fact and with less responsibility.

Eriksen usually ends up dropping deep in a 4231 anyway. So ends up making it a 433 half the time.

That's my point, still has a free role just with less defensive responsibility than if his starting position was in a CM3
when the 2 play narrower, he only has to cover when they are stretched.

We have to vary our formation game to game and Winks can play in a central 2 or 3 which gives us great options

Agree, but Ali instead of Eriksen in the middle.for.me.

Winks needs to be central to get the best from him in my opinion. Whinge (When he!) plays further to the right he tends be more sideways in play. I forget which recent match it was, but when he was central he got his head up and was playing some.good stuff forwards.

His main obstacle at the moment is playing like he won't get injured. Understandable after Such a long lay off. It'll come.
