Glad he signed, really do think he is an under rated player for us. He genuinely cares about the team and the fans.

I have just read this. No originator NOT ITK, can anyone shine a light on it.

'At the start of the world cup, the South Koreans announced that ANYONE that represents their country in ANY sporting event on a large scale, such as the world cup, the Olympics, PGA, Tennis etc will NOT need to take part in national service '

I assume we have had some confirmation re: military service then? Apologies if already mentioned

I've not seen any mention of it on any of the news sites frustratingly. However the club *must* be aware of it and so to offer a longer contract (rather than an improved one of the same length) must mean they are unconcerned. Perhaps Son is not planning to return?

The contract means nothing wrt his military service. We’re hardly going to want him finishing his service at 29 a free agent are we?

There’s an update in this story clarifying the deal between Spurs and the Korea FA about Son’s absences...

It’s good news for us as we won’t lose him for as long as we might have done, but he will still get the chance to go for the medals he needs to get exempted from military service.

PAJU, South Korea, July 31 (Yonhap) -- Son Heung-min will miss some of South Korea's future matches in a trade-off for his appearance at next month's Asian Games, officials here said Tuesday.

The Korea Football Association (KFA) said Son's Premier League club, Tottenham Hotspur, agreed to release Son for the Aug. 18-Sept. 2 Asian Games in Indonesia on the condition that he won't play in international friendlies in November and the first two group matches at the 2019 Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Asian Cup in January in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

'I don't travel there for nothing' - Heung-Min Son on the Asian Games and that military service

Tottenham Hotspur attacker Heung-Min Son has apologised for having to leave the club for the Asian Games but wants to return home a winner.

The 26-year-old signed a new five-year deal this summer to pledge his long-term future to the club, but in the short term Spurs are set to be without him for a while.

Son will play in the Premier League opener against Newcastle on August 11 and then be whisked away to Indonesia for the Asian Games, with the football section of the games lasting until September 1.

Tottenham is my home

"I am really thankful to Tottenham because they gave me this new contract. It didn’t take too many things to sign this new contract because they make my dream come true. I played in Germany and they made me an offer to join the Premier League. So I am very happy. There is nothing more to say other than for me Tottenham is my home."

Just heard Bayer Leverkusen refused to let Son go on international duties with South Korea when he was there. Of course South Korea won gold without Son.

Two chances left. Asian games now in August and Asian Cup in January.

The Asian Cup wouldn’t grant him exemption. Has to be a tournament that any athlete of any discipline could compete in ie. a medal at the Olympics or a gold at the Asian Games. Laws were changed after other athletes complained it was too easy for footballers to be granted exemption.

The Iran, Japan and China U23 teams are surprising weak with no overage players. Doesn't seem very keen on the asian game. Great chance for sonny. South Korea has Sonny and their keeper in the World Cup. And Hwang Hee-chan from RB as well (he is under 23)

What a weight off everyone's shoulders it would be if they won it. We'd suddenly have an £80m+ asset on a long contract who absolutely adores the club and its fanbase.

Fingers crossed.

Love Son but no way is he worth 80m+, even in this market. Those are the sorts of figures bandied around for the Martials, the Zahas, who in my opinion are a step up in quality. For me Son is more in the 45-60m bracket, max. Gets tons of goals but needs to up his consistency to be considered in that upper bracket of wingers.

But he's more consistent than Zaha and Martial though?

He's the hottest Asian player at present in one of the quickest growing football parts of the World. Players like him pull in far more than just goals & assists etc but I do agree with you he's not an £80m player.

I'd value him £70m tops, £60m-£65m realistically but where do you find players to replace him in equal measure for the cost & value? Two footed, a great character & ambassador for the club and knows where the back of the net is with remarkable consistency for what he is (scored 10+ goals in 5 out of his 7 full seasons as a pro including 18 & 21 for us across the last 2 seasons. I think that's the same or more than Firmino's got for Liverpool during that time). One of the greater signings made by the club over the last 3-4 years I wish we'd find more of them
