Can't imagine how much of a relief that must be for him. We've all been so focused on his impending military service, it's easy to forget that the bloke has just won a gold medal. Delighted for the bloke.

Didn't realise he is still only 26. He is going to be entering the prime of his career without the weight of potentially doing Military service, exciting times for us and him! Could be special times indeed.

Has it been officially announced that this team would be exempt from national service if they won the tournament?

It seems to me that the British press have been assuming that would be the case based on previous events.

Hope the club give him the chance to show off his medal and get some love from the crowd before the Liverpool game. Or at HT, assuming he won't be in the squad.

So SPURS now officially have both captains of the WC and the AC winners in their ranks. That must be a first (y)

It is the official South Korean position, smi finals of the world cup would have sufficed otherwise olympic gold or Asian cup. The thinking behind it is that they have now done a service to their nation.

So so happy for him (and us! (y)). Really deserves to play out a full career as a top level footballer. There is no doubt how much he loves his country and playing football is really the best way he can serve them and raise the standing of his country around the world.

Not for the Asian Cup. That is a different comp which is only for football.

The exemption is for the Asian Games, which has a multitude of different sports in the games, much like the Olympics but only open to Asian teams. Today’s win was at the Asian Games.
