Baffles me how he didn't end up winning the Golden Glove, Captaining his country to world cup success and pulling off some incredible saves along the way, Main reason it has annoyed me is i have missed out on three grand because of it ...
Courtois had 27 saves and a save % of 81%

Lloris had 12 saves, 66.7%

France conceded 6 goals in 7 matches (Lloris 6 goals in 6 matches)
Belgium conceded 6 goals in 7 matches (Courtois 6 goals in 7 matches)

I think in this tournament Lloris confirmed that he is the worst from the best goalkeepers in the world. Capable of incredible save and also of making stupid mistake. Let's be honest, were any of you suprised when he did what he did in the final? Cause I wasn't. But I also wasn't suprised when he was playing sooo well in previous games. This is just Lloris. I wouldn't look for replacement for now because there aren't many better goalkeepers and probably none we can afford, but also because I just like Lloris the way he is :D

Did you not see David De Gea's mistake against Portugal?

I think Lloris will gracefully step aside. There is no where to go but down from WC Champion. Its great to be able to walk away on top of the world.

I don't think he will be forced out, but it makes sense to begin the preparations for Qatar 2022 by having a new keeper participate in Euro 20
Why Lloris still has another tournament or two in him, and had a very good world cup, apart from that one error. There is no obvious up and coming goalkeeper in France who is clearly ready to take his mantle. There is no reason for him to call it a day apart from that he won the world cup. If he was in his mid-thirties okay, he is not. Still got a long future internationally as goalkeeper if he wanted.

Hugo, along with the rest of the French squad, will be presented with the Legion of Honour, France's highest award. Congrats, Hugo.

Also, the Paris Metro has temporarily renamed six of its stations in honour of the French squad's victory, including this one...

I asked a French acquaintance whether he'd thought someone would go with the obvious Victor Hugo joke.

'I had a hunch' he said.

I don't disagree - but I don't know if thats what he really "wants" - or would he rather have summers off for time with his family?

And, he'll be nearly 36 when the next WC starts - I don't think he will be a top keeper at 36. His skill set - quick reactions - will erode sooner than an old-fashioned shot-stopper. I think Caballero was the only 36 yo starting keeper in this WC - and he lost the job after 2 matches...

So, I don't think France will push him out, but at the same time, they would probably like to give a new keeper a shot at the Euros to have some tournament experience prior to Qatar 2022. I don't know where Areola is in terms of development, but I imagine he will get a few starts over the next couple of years in the League of Nations to see if he can be the next keeper.

it's only the 2nd professional trophy he's ever won (2012 league cup with Lyon...). Gives perspective on how hard it is, in the end of the day, to win anything. Luckily he'll add the prem and CL trophies next year, to make up for the lack :)

Don’t know if this has been already mentioned, but Hugo is the 4th goalkeeper to captain a World Cup winning team.

I think that is pretty extraordinary. Correct me if i’m wrong but “perceived wisdom” is that you want your captain to be an outfield player who is involved in the game as much as possible, so a centre back or midfielder.

It's unusual, but two of them were Italian, and they just give the captaincy to whoever has the most caps. So we're really just looking at Casillas and Hugo, and you can see why both of them got the armband.

Personally I don't think it really matters where the captain plays- if the goalkeeper is highly respected within the squad, and has good leadership qualities, then he can have the job...it's not like the manager isn't stood on the sidelines if anything needs changing or someone needs encouragement or a bollocking.

I can understand within the last season that or two Lloris has progressively been more ropey. However he imo was a great keeper and at the level of the two you mentioned if not better 2 or 3 seasons ago. Other than his distribution Lloris looked amazing.

De Gea until 2 seasons ago was overrated just because of shot stopping ability and Courtois is a keeper who goes through bad patches but doesnt seem to get too much stick for it

I've dragged it over here so we don't get the GT thread closed again for talking about stuff other than GT's.

I said at the time we got Lloris that there will be issues with him. I'd seen a bit of him at Lyon and his decision making has always been a bit iffy. He's got a clanger in him, he'd punch when he should catch sometimes, his distribution can be poor, putting players into trouble. And we've seen at Spurs he's got a weakness with low shots and his 1v1 has been weird lately too. But I also prefer keepers that are pro-active, and he is pro-active and was a massive upgrade on Friedel for example.

I don't think Lloris has ever been top, top class, which is why we got him and still have him. But I do think he's a decent jack of all, pro-active type, and upgrading wouldn't be a doddle.
